Men Charged Over Alleged Credit Card Scam

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 23] two young men appeared on charges alleging credit and debit card fraud, with 20-year-old Yan Infante Almanzak and 18-year-old high school student Dariel Reyes-Nunez facing a slew of charges.

The charges, some 49 of them, alleged that both were involved in a scheme that saw them use a card reader machine to collect data off credit and debit cards that had been swiped. The machine was then allegedly used to create a new cards from blank cards, thereby creating a new card, which was then allegedly used to obtain goods and services from local establishments .

The charges involved counts of obtaining a false instrument, using a false instrument, receiving goods knowing them to be stolen and making a false debit or credit card. All the charges stem from activity alleged to have occurred between January and February 2015.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted both defendants bail of $15,000 each with one like surety, required to surrender their travel documents, not leave this jurisdiction, wear electronic monitoring devices, abide by a curfew and report to Hamilton Police Station every Monday and Friday. Reyes-Nunez was said to be a student at Pembroke high school.

Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that both men are the stepsons of Bermudian men who are married to their Dominican mothers; and that the police investigation was ongoing and could involve matters and persons overseas.
