March 13, 2015

[Updated] Students and staff at Saltus Grammar School are topping off their ongoing effort to raise funds for and awareness of cancer research today [Mar 13] by taking part in sponsored head shaving.

Around 90 students, along with a few staff members, from Upper Primary and Secondary took part in the event, shedding their locks in the name of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an international charity that raises funds for childhood cancer research, which is holding its own annual head shaving event tonight at Docksiders.

The Docksiders event will build on Saltus’ early start, featuring people from around the island, including one father and his three young sons, shaving their heads in order to raise funds.

A Saltus spokesperson previously said, “Some of the funds go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart programme. In addition, a few of the girls will be donating their hair to “Locks of Love.” This event is made possible by a number of hairdressers and barbers who are volunteering their time.”

“Representatives from the organizations will be making age-appropriate presentations to the School assemblies.

“Not to be outdone by the students, almost 50 members of staff have signed up as a staff team for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s “Relay for Life” on May 29th/30th at the National Sports Centre.”

Update 4.56pm: The school newsletter said, “109 Primary and Secondary students, along with relatives and staff, took part in a sponsored head shaving to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation [a portion of these funds will go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart programme].

“In addition, some of the girls donated their hair to “Locks of Love” [the youngest in S2], and some of our incredibly brave girls also had their heads shaved. This event was made possible by a number of hairdressers and barbers who volunteered their time and expertise, as well as our dedicated staff who worked so hard to organize the event.”
