16 Yr Old Arai Joell-Johnston Dies After Collision

The police have confirmed that a 16-year-old male has died following a traffic collision in Paget.
A police spokesperson said, “Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place at 11:10pm [Tuesday] on Harbour Road 50 meters west of Chapel Road in Paget.
“Details are sketchy at this point but it appears that a 16 year old on an auxillary cycle collided with a car.
“This resulted in the 16 year old being taken to the hospital where he is believed to be in critical condition. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact police on 295-0011.”
The BFRS said, “At approximately 11:08 pm tonight, Tuesday, March 31, 2015, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a road traffic accident near the Newstead Hotel, #27 Harbour Road in Warwick.
Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Russann Francis stated, “We received a call at our 911 dispatch center stating there was a teenaged cycle rider who collided with a car and is trapped under it.
“On Fire Service arrival the duty crew immediately employed the use of high pressure lifting bags to lift the car. The rider was taken to KEMH via ambulance.”
Update 12.56am: The police have confirmed that the 16 year old has died.
“No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified,” added Police spokesperson Dwayne Caines.

Update April 1, 11.34am: The police have officially named the 16 year old as Arai Joell-Johnston of Paget.
A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 16 year old Arai Joell-Johnston of Paget and extends condolences to his family and friends.
“Arai was seriously injured when the auxiliary cycle he was riding collided with a car around 11:10pm Tuesday, March 31st on Harbour Road in Paget just 50 meters west of Chapel Road. He was subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital at 11:52pm Tuesday.
“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned Joell -Johnston family to assist them at this difficult time and a full investigation into this fatal collision is ongoing.
“The investigating officer Constable David Ward is urging any witnesses to this fatal collision that have not already come forward to contact him at the Roads Policing Unit on telephone number 247-1230 or via e-mail Dward@bps.bm.
“The death of Arai Joell-Johnston marks the third road fatality for 2015.”
Update 6.48pm: A PLP spokesperson said, “The Progressive Labour Party would like to express our sincerest condolences to the family of road fatality victim, 16 year old Arai Joell-Johnston. We pray that his family and friends will be comforted by their memories as they navigate this difficult time.”
Update 7.15pm: Minister of Tourism and Transport Shawn Crockwell offered his sincere condolences to the family and friends of Arai Joell-Johnston. “My prayers are with them as they deal with their loss and grief,” Minister Crockwell said.
