Cycling: BBA 2016 Road Race Season Kicks Off
Twenty-nine teams of four riders turned up to the Bermuda Bicycle Association’s opening race of the 2016 road race season this morning [March 6],
The 10.8 mile team time trial course ran from the Paget post office to Barnes Corner via Middle Road and then back along South Road to Bermuda College. Near-perfect conditions were only diminished by a few sprinkles of rain but the cool and overcast morning let all the competitors race as maximum effort.
Taking the title overall was the Madison Digicel quartet of Dominique Mayho, Phillip Mace, Mark Robinson and Kwame Curling in a time of 24:28, making the loop at an average speed of 26.5 mph.
Though recording the second fastest time of 25:53, the Winners Edge group was disqualified, opening the door for Team Tokio’s David McComas, Fabian Schoenenberg, Pete Crayford and Dylan Hill to take second, followed by Team Rampage [Neil Lupsic, Anton Schmitz, Spencer Butterfield and Jonathan Herring].
In the Women’s category Ashley Eswanik, Allison Petty and Kristin Palmer nudged the Bicycle Works Women [Wenda Roberts, Earlena Ingham, Zoey Roberts and Alyssa Rowse] into second, followed by the Winners Edge team of Tammy Ingham, Julia Hawley, Eileen Mullowney and Joanne Medeiros.
The union category was won by Bermuda Cycling Academy’s team of Ben Edwards, Rajul Matthie-Shakir and Tre Brangman while their younger teammates Ensue-Nico Davis, Manning Smith, Nazarai Fox and Ahzai Smith finished second in the category.
With mountain bike racing season still going, the next several weeks will make for a busy March for cycling. Next Sunday the Fat Tire Massive MTB racing moves to Hogg Bay and the following weekend is the a BBA time trial around Harrington Sound. On Easter,March 27th, the BBA will host the 2016 Bermuda National Mountain Biking Championships at Southlands in Warwick.
