Police Respond To Paget Area, Man On Roof

April 11, 2016

[Updated] As of 11.50pm this evening, police are on scene at a house in Paget as a man — who the police said appears to be intoxicated — is positioned on a roof, where he can be heard shouting sporadically.

The police said the man threatened to have his dogs attack the police, so the dogs were secured and a taser was deployed, however it was “ineffective.”

Ord Road Paget Bermuda, April 11 2016-1-2

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “At 9.36pm on Monday, police responded to a report of an incident at a residence on Tribe Road #5 in Paget.

“It appears that a male was intoxicated on his property and acting erratically.

“Upon police arrival, the man threatened to have his dogs attack the police. The dog warden was called, the dogs were secured and the taser was deployed on the subject, however it was ineffective.

“The man is now on the roof of his dwelling and trained police negotiators are on hand and communicating with the subject. Area residents are asked for their patience as traffic is being diverted in the area,” Mr Caines added.

Police remain on scene, and we will update as able.

Update 12.13am: The man remains on the roof and is still shouting occasionally. He is talking about his dogs and also using some profanity.

Update 12.29am: The man remains on the roof, occasionally shouting to demand his dogs back. He appears to be smoking a cigarette now.

Update 12.48am: The man appears to still be on the roof, however has not been shouting recently and it is rather quiet now.

Update 1.06am: He is still on the roof, but the scene remains quiet. We are not sure how long he plans to stay in position, however will update again when the police confirm the situation has changed.

Update 8.06am: Mr Caines said, “At 2am, after a protracted stand off, police were stood down, the dogs seized and there is now a lookout for the 29-year-old suspect’s arrest.”

Update 11.25am:
A police statement said, “Around 9:30pm on Monday 11-April, police responded to an incident, which occurred at a private residence in the Tribe Road No.5, Paget area.

“On arrival, police engaged a 29-year-old Paget man who appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants. When spoken to by police, the man threatened to have his dogs attack them; this led to the animal warden having to be called to secure the dogs.

“An attempt was made to restrain the man resulting in the deployment of Taser but it was ineffective. He then retreated to his roof where he remained until around 2:00am when the offers were eventually stood down.

“There were no injuries reported during this incident, however a lookout to be arrested has been issued for the 29-year-old and a court appearance for several related offences is expected near future.”

Sometimes they don’t work on drunk people, they don’t feel a thing.
Or maybe he’s an electrician by trade, they don’t work well on them either LOL…

      • observer says:

lol, the taser are not designed to inflict pain, the tasers are designed to immobilize the person. If it was ineffective either the officer missed or only one barb hit the man

        • Verly says:

Observer, as someone that has had a taser used on me (training, not criminal activity) I can testify that it is very painful.

    • Sorry Sir says:

Sometimes they just don’t work on some people. I’ve seen a highly intoxicated man get tasered and reached down and take it out of his leg on Church Street.

I take it “rather quiet” meant he had finally passed out. Unfortunately many of us can empathize with this family and hopefully this is the low that triggers the road to recovery.

  6. mmm says:

More and more helping agencies need to advertise their services, and access needs to be pass the 9 to 5 time frame and week ends off. Such information can also be posted on community bulletin boards, grocery stores, gas statio ns. It was said that he was drunk, and I know some folk can really act up when drunk. Hope-fully the right services, if needed, are available. Let,s take this opportunity to educate the wider community. Hope all goes well for the gentleman.

  9. Whistling Frog says:

Thy should have thrown him a joint instead of firing their taser. He would have come down right after smoking that…
Cops and government need to start thinking outside the box.

  10. Joka says:

Throw up a joint. Go ice queen get food. Start to eat. Down in 5 mins. Problem solved. Crashed out and in handcuffs.

  11. sml says:

All this caused them to seize his dogs! smh. Did he threaten to kill himself or harm others??? If not why call the police and the wardens! I hope they don’t put the dogs down.

  12. Truth Seeker says:

Huh? Am I reading right? The police left the scene empty handed. So all one has to do if they don’t want to be arrested is head to the nearest roof and refuse to cooperate

  13. Dangel says:

    @Truth Seeker ….apparently so!
The person obviously needs help and I hope he gets it! I pray for courage and strength for the family to ensure that he gets the help needed.

  14. ROGER LAMBERT says:

Sad on him, hope he gets his problem taken care of. Glad the police showed restraint again(pathway to success too). What ever laws he broke will be addressed to him after he is down, safely.

  15. Wondering says:

Has nobody seen “Say Anything…” boombox scene? He was probably serenading the neighbor with a song before the police interrupted.
