Regiment To Host Family Fun Day On Saturday

The island’s defence force is to throw open its doors this weekend for a family fun day designed to showcase the benefits of service.

Royal Bermuda Regiment Adjutant Major Duncan Simons said: “We want to provide an opportunity for the public and particularly potential recruits to get a look behind the scenes of the Regiment.

“We’re happy to answer questions and help people learn more about what we have to offer.”

The open day at Warwick Camp on Saturday will feature not only displays from the Regiment’s specialist units like Guns & Assault Pioneers, – the RBR’s engineers -  the Band and Corps of Drums, medics, signals and Boat Troop, but also a firepower demonstration.

In addition, a range of child-friendly activities like face-painting and a fun castle, and drinks and snacks will be on offer.

Maj. Simons said: “The main effort this year is to make our open day approachable and family-orientated with events families and children can enjoy.”

He added that the modern Regiment was an open, professional and highly-motivated organisation which operated equal opportunities policies and had a string of external awards under its belt.

These include two successive appearances in the Top Ten Employers list compiled by the Bottom Line magazine, the only public sector organisation to be included, as well as this year’s best Government service in the Bermudian magazine.

Maj. Simons said: “All these accolades underline that the RBR offers much more than a uniform – it’s a chance to help our community, learn new and marketable skills, travel and develop leadership skills, all of which are attractive to potential civilian employers.

“We want as many people through the gates of Warwick Camp as possible. We want potential recruits, but also those who can influence potential recruits to join and former soldiers and their families are also welcome.”

He added: “It’s a good opportunity for people to see what we do and help strengthen our links with the community we serve.”

The open day starts at 2pm and ends at 5pm and parking is available across the road from the camp gates and at the Chaplin Bay beach car park.
