Public Consultation For IRP Proposal Extended

July 3, 2018

The deadline for public consultation on the Integrated Resource Plan [IRP] Proposal for Bermuda’s future electricity needs has been extended until August 17th.

An RA spokesperson said, “The Regulatory Authority of Bermuda has received approval from the Minister of Transport and Regulatory Affairs to extend the deadline for public consultation on the Integrated Resource Plan [IRP] Proposal for Bermuda’s future electricity needs until August 17th, 2018.

“The IRP Proposal Consultation was initially published on May 3rd, 2018 and requested public feedback and invited the submission of alternative proposals for bulk generation or demand-side resources. The initial legislative deadline for submission of responses was July 2nd, 2018.

“The Authority sought Ministerial approval to waive the 60-day legislative deadline due to several requests from members of the public and other interested parties requiring more time to provide meaningful feedback into this important process.

“After public consultation, the Authority will use the process to set out the strategy and lay the foundation for the future of Bermuda’s electricity sector, balancing the island’s long-term electricity demand and supply needs.

“Regulatory Authority Interim Chief Executive, Aaron Smith said; “We are keen for as many stakeholders as possible to participate in this public consultation process. We believe that this extension will permit further public review and comment as well as an opportunity for other interested parties to submit alternative proposals for bulk generation or demand side resources for potential inclusion in the IRP.”

“The electricity sector IRP will set out the strategy for the procurement and retirement of generation assets as well as demand-side resources that meet the needs of consumers, in a cost-efficient manner, in a way that is consistent with Bermuda’s energy policy objectives.

“The IRP Proposal Consultation documents are available on the Authority’s website.“

It seems that the RA moves at a pace slightly slower than that of a snail.
