Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Princess Dana Firas of Jordan, Alana Anderson, Dame Fiona Reynolds and Catherine Leonard took part in Bernews most recent News & Views panel, discussing diversity and inclusion in conservation.

Dame Fiona Reynolds is the President of the International National Trusts Organisation, Catherine Leonard is the Secretary General of the International National Trusts Organisation, Princess Dana Firas is the President of the Petra National Trust, and Alana Anderson is the President of the Bermuda National Trust.

They are in Bermuda for the International Conference of National Trusts [ICNT] event, which was held as the result of a successful bid by the Bermuda National Trust and attended by approximately 100 people from conservation organisations from over 30 countries around the world.

The conference theme is diversity and inclusion and is entitled “Arms Wide Open – Strategies for Engaging with Diverse Communities”.

Queen Quet had already brought the house down with a rousing speech at the opening of the conference, prompting the organizers to joke they may as well declare the conference over. She represents the Gullah/Geechee people of the south east USA, who according to their website, “have been considered ‘a nation within a nation’ from the time of chattel enslavement in the United States.”

Princess Dana Firas represents the Petra National Trust, which was established in 1989 to protect and preserve the archaeology, history, culture and nature of Petra, with a mission to “protect the natural and cultural heritage of Jordan.”

Bermuda National Trust President Alana Anderson was also on the panel, and noted the BNT was proud to host the conference, and said there are so many stories to be told, and with over 30 nations represented, the amount of knowledge available was huge, adding that “who we are today, is a reflection of who we are in the past.”
