Sailboat Headed For Azores Diverts To Bermuda

A sailboat en route from the USA to the Azores had to divert to Bermuda following both technical and medical difficulties. On July 1st the sailboat ‘Eloise Belle’ was approximately 360 nautical miles north-northwest of Bermuda with two persons on board on a voyage from Newport, Rhode Island, USA, to Horta, Azores.

They contacted Bermuda Radio and reported steering gear failure and their intention to divert to Bermuda. A communications schedule was established and close attention paid to a crew member experiencing severe sea sickness. On the July 6th at 9:05 am, ‘Eloise Belle’ arrived safely, un-aided to St.George’s harbour.
