Goodbye To Tropical Storm Colin

August 8, 2010

The-Wave-Good-ByeThe cliche says to “prepare for the worst, and hope for the best”, and in Bermuda’s case we seem to have done so, with Tropical Storm Colin weakening to the point it is no longer classified as a storm.

On their 11:30am forecast this morning [Aug 8] the Bermuda Weather Service said that Colin is being downgraded to a Tropical Depression, but “remains a threat to Bermuda until it passes early this evening” and that “strong, occasionally tropical storm force winds can be expected this afternoon and evening, easing overnight”. They further state that the closest point of approach will be at 3pm this afternoon.

The US National Hurricane Center said, as of 11am local time, that the depression is 50 miles off Bermuda, moving at a rate of about 12 mph and its maximum sustained winds are 35 mph. They have changed the “tropical storm warning” for Bermuda to a “tropical storm watch.” They state that little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, however, the depression could degenerate to a trough of low pressure during the next day or so.

This is not the first time this weather system has changed; it was orginally deemed to be a Tropical Depression, upgraded to a Tropical Storm on Aug 3rd, downgraded to a depression, and on Aug 5th upgraded to a Tropical Storm again.
