Video: Waves Crashing at John Smiths Bay

September 17, 2010

The video below was filmed at 6pm tonight [Sept 17], and shows greatly increased wave activity at Johns Smiths Bay on the South Shore as the massive Hurricane Igor churns in our direction. Photos taken at the same time are here.

The road is starting to flood and sea spray can be felt yards away from the ocean. Government has confirmed that portions of the South Road in Smith’s will be closed to motor traffic from the Brown Darrell Clinic to Watch Hill Road from 10:00am tomorrow. Barriers and signage will be erected but area residents will not be impacted by the barriers.

Earlier today Dr. Mark Guishard, Director of Bermuda Weather Service, said we can expect a storm surge on the order of 5 to 7 feet above the normal tide levels, and that maximum waves at the centre of the storm are in excess of 50 feet.

We will be bringing you continous coverage of Hurricane Igor, and for our previous posts of the storm click here.

that house has seen many a storm come and go…. Hope it stays that way!
It’s probably the most photographed house in Bermuda considering John Smith’s Bay is a favorite spot for catching the action of the surf.

I lived at Breaker’s club for a couple of years back in the late 80′s. That house will be there longer than most of the people who say “That house is gonna be gone”

I,VE SEEN THE PINK HOUSE’S STEPS LEFT 15 FT. UP ABOVE THE BEACH AFTER A HURRICANE. THE NEXT YEAR WHEN I RETURNED ALL WAS BACK AS IT SHOULD BE. AMAZING WHAT MOTHER NATURE AND THE WEATHER CAN DO. MAY GOD KEEP YOU ALL SAFE! AND YES, JOHN SMITH’S IS MY FAVORITE BEACH IN BDA.
