Videos: Vasco Da Gama Club Gala Dinner
The Vasco Da Gama Club celebrated their 75th Anniversary last night [Oct 9] at the Hamilton Princess Hotel. The Club, named after the famed Portuguese explorer, was founded in Hamilton, Bermuda on or around October 11th 1935. The exact date is unknown but recalled as being between October 7th and October 11th.
The original founder’s key objectives were to create an environment dedicated to the development and preservation of the Portuguese language and culture and to assist any member of the association during a time of need. 75 years later the Club has grown in strength, and is a well known part of the island’s fabric. Vasco President Mr. R. Paul Fortuna said the event was a momentous occasion, to not only celebrate their 75 years but to celebrate the contributions of both the club and the island’s Portuguese community to Bermuda.
Mr Fortuna thanked all those that had worked for the Club over the years, and explained the obstacles faced back in the 1930s for the Portuguese to be able to establish the club, in the face of the discrimination that was so prevalent in those years.
