Endocrinology: Bermudian Physician Joins BHB
Bermuda Hospitals Board today [Nov 12] announces the appointment of Bermudian specialist physician Dr Annabel Fountain BSc(Hon), MB BS, MRCP.
Dr Fountain is an Endocrinologist, who specialises in diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine system, such as Hypertension, Lipid Disorders, Obesity, Hyponatraemia, Hypogonadism, Infertility, Pituitary disorders, Adrenal disorders, Disorders of Calcium & Bone Metabolism and other Endocrine tumours and conditions.
Dr Fountain is based in the Diabetes Education Centre, which this week moved to the Fairview Court building on the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute Campus. Her services are available by physician referral.
Dr Donald Thomas III, Chief of Staff at BHB comments: “I am very pleased to be announcing Dr Fountain’s appointment. As everyone knows, Diabetes is a major problem in Bermuda, so having a Bermudian specialist in this area is fantastic news for people on the island. Her other areas of specialization will also give people access to much-needed medical services on-island.”
Dr Fountain attended Bermuda High School for Girls until the age of eleven when she went to boarding school in the UK. She started University at Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School (Imperial College, Westminster) in 1994. In 1997 she completed her Bachelor of Science in Physiology with Honors and went on to qualify as a doctor in June 2000.
Throughout her medical training, Dr Fountain has been interested in and focused on Endocrinology. Her first post as a doctor was working for an Endocrinology consultant at West Middlesex University Hospital in West London. Dr Fountain is also qualified in General Internal Medicine.
Dr Fountain has worked in London, the Isle of Wight, Bath and New Zealand since qualifying. Her specialty training commenced in 2005 on the Imperial College London Rotation where she worked at the prestigious Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals, amongst others. She has been involved in the treatment of Thyroid disorders (including cancer), Hypertension, Lipid Disorders, Obesity, Hyponatraemia, Hypogonadism, Infertility, Pituitary disorders, Adrenal disorders, Disorders of Calcium & Bone Metabolism and other Endocrine tumours and conditions.
Dr Fountain comments: “Knowing that Bermuda had a particularly high proportion of its population with Type 2 Diabetes made me more determined to study Endocrinology and return home to work. I have cared for inpatients and outpatients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and am experienced in the use of a wide variety of treatments for type 2 diabetes. I am especially interested in the use of newer pharmacological agents for treatment of this disorder as well as recommending lifestyle management and treatments for overweight. I am particularly interested in the treatment of Diabetic Foot disease, Diabetes in Pregnancy and use of medications to ameliorate progression of Nephropathy and Retinopathy.”

For the past 4 months She has being treated with anti-depressants (Citalopram)-toxic symptoms- for Mood changes,anxiety, panic attacks, excessive apetite, etc., However a newfinding came up on August 26, a blood test showed a low TSH ( .17 – normal limits .48 to 2.5 ) Hyperthyroidism, fits her symptoms. I wonder if you would be so kind and see her. I just found you on Linkedin and it is so wonderful that there is anendocrinologinst in Bermuda.
