‘Stella’ Dies After Pedal Bike Accident

[Updated] Only days after the death of Kirk Simons, Bermuda has sadly recorded another road fatality with the death of 60-year-old Gladwin Reginald Gilbert, who succummbed yesterday morning [Dec 14] to injuries received in an accident this past Friday. Better known as ‘Stella’, Mr Gilbert was a colourful character, well known and beloved across the island.

At around 10:20am on Friday [Dec 10], the accident occurred on Parsons Road outside of Jamaican Grill; Mr Gilbert was riding a pedal cycle and collided with a motorcycle. Police previously appealed for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Ian Taitt on 295-0011. Despite requests on our part both yesterday and today, officials have yet to confirm Mr Gilbert’s death, however we do anticipate receiving an official statement at a later point.

Update 12:30pm: Official Police statement: “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 60 year old Gladwin Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was pronounced dead at 11am on Tuesday, December 14th 2010 in the Intensive Care Unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious road traffic collision that occurred around 10:20am Friday, December 10th on Parsons Road in Pembroke when the pedal cycle he was riding was in collision with a motorcycle ridden by a 59 year old Devonshire woman. She was initially treated for her injuries on a general ward at the hospital but has since been discharged. ”

“The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Gilbert. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision or anyone with any information to contact PC Bianca Glasford of the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011. The death of Gladwin Gilbert marks the 12th road fatality for 2010.”

6. 27 yr old Omar Sutton died on May 29 after a collision with a truck
7. 69 yr old Derek Smith died on April 24, weeks after being struck by a motorcycle
8. 41 yr old Andre Hendrickson died on April 17 after being struck by a car while walking
9. 26 yr old Carlton Darrell died on April 2nd after a single vehicle accident in Devonshire
10. 23 yr old Dareiko Simons died on Jan 9 after his bike collided with a car in Sandys
11. 21 yr old Earl Ingemann died after a Jan 1st car crash, man arrested & charged in connection\
