Butterfield Promotes Student Networking

December 23, 2010

The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Ltd. yesterday (Dec. 22) held its sixth annual “Butterfield 411″ Student Networking Event at the Bermuda Society of Arts in City Hall. The objectives of the Butterfield 411 are to create opportunities for local high school graduates and college/university students by helping them to make important business contacts and develop their networking skills.

Donna Harvey-Maybury, Butterfield’s executive vice-president for Human Resources said Butterfield 411 is designed to get young Bermudians thinking about the importance of networking.

“This year we encouraged the students to ‘bank on their opportunities’ and offered advice about how to make the most of career opportunities after graduating into a challenging job market,” she said. “Each year, this event is organised by Butterfield’s talented group of Management Trainees, so it really is an event run by young people, for young people.”

After hearing talks by Donna and Curtis Dickinson, executive vice-president for Wealth Management, 411 attendees participated in a short networking game where students earned “dollars” by impressing Butterfield staff with their speed-networking skills.

Alisha Jones was the first student to collect 25 “dollars” and won a 12MP Nikon digital camera which she was presented with by Butterfield management trainee Gaynete’ Edwards (pictured above). Ty’esha Oswald was the second student to cash in and received a $75 Phoenix Stores voucher.

The evening was brought to a close by Bradford Kopp, Butterfield’s president & chief executive officer who emphasised the importance of choosing an employer where there is a breadth of opportunities and where there is a fit with the candidate’s aspirations.

Students who are interested in attending next year’s 411 event in December 2011 should visit the bank’s website www.butterfieldgroup.com.
