December 2, 2010

parking-sign-dec 2010The City of Hamilton today [Dec 2] announced there will be free parking in all city car parks over the next three Saturdays.

In addition to Bulls Head and Elliott Street which are always free on Saturdays, the following car parks are affected: City Hall, Number 1, Number 5, Number 8, Cavendish and Par-la-Ville.

Motorists will still have to pay to park on the streets.

In making the announcement, Mr. Edward Benevides, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary for the City of Hamilton said, “I am pleased to inform the public that the City of Hamilton will not charge for parking in any of the car parks over the next three Saturday, starting this Saturday. We believe this will make it easier for people to come into the Hamilton and shop without worrying about paying for parking. We encourage shoppers to use any of the car parks for a few minutes or a few hours as they search for the perfect gift.”

Mr. Benevides added, “We believe and support the Buy in Bermuda campaign and this is the City’s contribution to get people into Hamilton and shopping.

Great! The shop staff will clog up City Hall & Parla Ville car parks all day & potential shoppers will still be circling the blocks looking for somewhere to park.

Here’s an idea. Chain off the entrances to those parks till after 9:15.

  2. Harmony says:

I think this is a good contribution.

  3. Downderoad says:

Some people are so negative, chain off the parking lots. I you feel that way then catch the BUS!!!!!!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

So, Downderoad, other than an attack, do you have anything to contribute?

Hamilton has not been shopper friendly for a long long time. You have a hard time to dind a spot for a bike never mind a car. I am in the habit of driving my car into town ONLY if I intend to purchase something too large to carry on my bike or if it is raining. Even the lack of short term parking for a bike discourages me from buying in Hamilton if I can get what I want outside.

Yes the free parking weekends is a good idea but the City Hall & Parlaville parks should be for short term, up to four hours maybe, so that people who have appointments/shopping have somewhere to go. Also there should be much more short term cycle parking & much more cycle parking in general. One person with one car takes up the parking space of five people with five bikes.

Lets not even get into the monster size cars people have these days. I get along just fine with my class B size.

  4. great shood be all of december at city hall parking lot

  5. RME says:

Should include street parking as well!! Triangle Dritter is right – if you’re not there by first thing in the morning you’ll prabaly be out of luck.

  6. Uncle Ruckus says:

Lol at “monster size cars”. No car on Bermudas roads should be considered “monster sized”. Go to the U.S. then you’ll see some monster sized cars. Anywaydoe this is a good idea except for when people tear the ass out of it and take all day shopping. It’s hard now finding a spot when you have to pay I can’t imagine how long people will take now that’s its going to be free.

    • Peace and Love says:

@ Uncle Ruckus if you reside in bermuda you would know what “Triangle Drifter” was reffering to when he/she mentioned “monster sized” The SUV’s that are here are too big for our narrow roads…

      • Sara says:

Not to mention the people driving them don’t seem to have the depth perception to navigate the vehicle!!!
