The Winner May Be You at Oscars Gala
Predict who the Oscars go to this year and the real winner may be you at an upcoming Bermuda International Film Festival gala fundraiser.
BIFF, now in its 14th year and considered one of the world’s leading independent film festivals, is holding its “And the Winner Is …” event on Saturday, February 26 at Tucker’s Point Hotel and Spa.
The Hollywood-style event will feature food and drinks as well as a Calcutta Auction where guests may bid on their favourite Oscar-nominated films for a significant cash prize.
Smaller cash prizes will be awarded to guests who vote for the winners of other major Oscar categories.Winners will be announced following the Academy Awards ceremony on February. 27.
In addition to the Calcutta Auction, the red carpet will be rocking with entertainment from Mohawk Radio and DJ Fozzy and trailers for all 10 movies nominated for Best Picture will be screened at the party.
Tickets are $125 and can be obtained from the BIFF offices at 15 Front Street, Hamilton by calling 293-3456. They will also soon be available online at: www.premiertickets.bm.
Leading the Oscar pack this year is director Tom Hooper’s historical drama “The King’s Speech,” which received 12 nominations — falling just short of the all-time record of 14 nominations which went to “All About Eve” in 1950 and “Titanic” in 1997.
The “King’s Speech” tells the story of King George VI (Colin Firth), who reluctantly succeeds to the British throne when his brother abdicates. When his stutter raises concerns about his leadership skills, King George VI eventually comes into his own with the help of unconventional speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). Before long the King and Logue have forged an unlikely bond, a bond that proves to have real strength when the United Kingdom faces the mortal peril of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.
While the inspirational “The King’s Speech” is widely considered the front runner in the Academy Awards race, it’s expected to face strong competition from director David Fincher’s “The Social Network” — the story of David Zukerberg and the rise of Facebook. “The Social Network” received eight nominations, including nods for Best Picture and Best Director.
“The Social Network’s” writer Aaron Sorkin is all but a lock to take home the golden statuette for his screenplay, widely acclaimed for its intelligent and perceptive take on the social phenomenon that Facebook has created.
“And the Winner Is …” gets underway at 7 pm, with Mohawk Radio performing a one-hour set from 10pm until 11 pm and DJ Fozzy performing from 11pm until the wrap-up.
Guests will be able to purchase ballots for the Calcutta Auction from tables set up around the party, allowing them to vote for their choices for Best Picture and in other leading categories.
Once the votes have been tabulated after the Oscars presentation, the pot will be divided between the winning voters and BIFF — which is holding its upcoming festival in Hamilton from March 18-23.
