‘Like Newfoundland With Palm Trees’
A Bermuda Police Inspector says she has found more similarities than differences between the island and her native Canadian province — saying her adopted home is “Newfoundland with palm trees.”
Insp. Tracey Burgess, who hails from Newfoundland’s Grand Banks, has lived in Bermuda for 17 years and joined the Police Service after marrying a Bermudian in 1998.
“It’s a beautiful island. The people are wonderful. I love living in Bermuda,” she tells tells a Canadian newspaper today.
One of only three female Inspectors in the Bermuda Police, Mrs. Burgess said her position often requires her to take charge of serious incidents and be a situation commander when the need arises — but she has never encountered gender discrimination in the line of duty.
“One of the things I have to say about the locals, especially the men, is that they really respect their mothers,” she said. “So it’s almost like when I go to a job it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s a female,’ and right away the respect level is little bit higher.”
Mrs. Burgess had little trouble making the transition from Newfoundland to Bermuda when she originally came here to work in the hospitality field, reported the Canadian newspaper – ”both have strong connections to Britain, are English speaking; both rely on the bounty of the sea and both have strong cultural identities. Bermuda also shares a love of codfish.”
