Two Women Jailed for Drug Importation

February 15, 2011

Two women were sentenced to prison terms, after pleading guilty in Magistrates Court this morning [Feb 15] to charges they imported and possessed cannabis resin. Shaniqwa O’Brien, 20, and Desiree Burrows, 21, both received sentences of 18 months in prison.

The DPP’s evidence was that on 8th January 2011, the two women arrived in Bermuda on a charter flight from Jamaica. Both women were sent for a secondary Customs search. For both women, after their luggage had been searched, no illegal drugs were found. However, both women were asked to agree to an Xray and both refused.

Based on Police and Customs intelligence, both women were asked if they had ingested illegal drugs. Ms O’Brien replied: “No”. Ms Burrows complained that: “This is bulls&$t…”.

The Police were called. Subsequently, both women were taken to KEMH where they were detained. Between 9th and 11th January Ms O’Brien excreted 27 pellets of cannabis resin found to weigh 141.5 grams and said to have a street value of $14,150 .

Also at KEMH and in the same period, Ms Burrows first pulled 7 pellets from inside her body and later excreted another 19 pellets. The combination weighed 141.5 grams said to have a street value of $14,150.

The evidence offered was that the two women had been offered $5,000 to bring in the drugs.

Speaking before being sentenced, Ms O’Brien said: “I am sorry. I just want to get my life back together.” Ms Burrows said: “I understand what I did and take responsibility for my actions. I had a job. I am sorry.”

Before passing an eighteen month custodial sentence on each of the two women, Chief Magistrate Archie Warner rejected defending lawyer Larry Scott’s request for a Social Inquiry Report on the two women, saying, in part that: “This was a callous importation done for money.”

  5. Geza Wolf says:

Yeah yeah, dont go after the people who paid them to import. Arrest the people who were struggling and needed the money. I love the drug war.

    • sandgrownan says:

Actually, there is merit to this suggestion. Say to these two idiots “OK, jail for 5 years, but if you tell us who paid you to do this, then it’s 18 months. Oh, and 5 years means 5 years.”

    • Winnie says:

And the beat goes on and on, just 2 mules getting caught. big guy sits in his mansion virtually untouchable, looking to find more fools.

  6. Downderoad says:

Wow the big girl mite still have some pellets still in there lol. I really hope our young women learn from this Dumbness. Come on what’s your freedom wroth $5,000!!!

    • OH NO says:

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. I think i just may have ruined my keyboard spitting water all over it. That was really funny

  7. Nicki says:

LOL! Just dumb. People need to learn how customs work, you knew those two were going to be sent to be searched. SMH. These girls and boys will never learn. Was all that worth 5gs?

    • Bda Longtail says:

Actual were the dumb ones because now they can take some college classes in prison for free. Does anyone know if we the tax payers pay for the classes or their family?

That’s not a real prison it’s an Art & Crafts school. Look @ their faces do they really look sad. They got 18 months…….we’ll see them in less then 12!

  8. sandgrownan says:

And I sentence you to a further 18 monthd for being “dumb as a sack of hammers”

  9. Educate female says:

Might as well put your income on hold by going to BDA College and then away to have the option of earning at least $5k a month. But question, is your life worth only $5 Gs since you ran the risk of loosing it for such a small amount? Ladies, please love yourself and stop stooping so low. Guys and Gals, stop relying on others to pave your road for you….only you live ya life!! Please do yourself a favor….

    • Bda Longtail says:

I don’t think they’ll be reading this anytime soon, but then again they do have phones in prison.

  10. mixitup says:

WHAT IDIOT COMES OFF A CHARTER FROM JAMAICA (OF ALL PLACES) CARRYING DRUGS? OH RITE SHANIQUA AND COMPANY. HOW DUMB CAN YOU BE?

    • 007 says:

Shut up ppl make mistakes yess it was stupid.

      • lifeblood says:

That wasn’t a mistake…mistakes aren’t planned and deliberately carried out.

      • FOR REAL??? says:

But this is one mistake that could have been avoided if they read the paper. How long has the charter flight to/from Jamaica been in service and how many people have been caught trying to move weed on this flight??? Sometimes it is wise to learn from other people mistakes than make the same dumb mistake yourself.

So young and now no longer able to travel freely. Who wants to be stuck on de rock for the rest of their lives?? REALLY.

        • Geza Wolf says:

Pretty sure people have been moving weed on this flight as long as it ahs been active. The real movers and shakers dont get caught though.

      • crazytalk says:

007, a ‘mistake’ is when you forget to close the front door, or when you forget to feed the goldfish one morning.

It is not a ‘mistake’ when, in return for money, you shove illegal drugs into your – well, you know where – and smuggle them into another country.

That was not a ‘mistake’. It was deliberate.

I think the sentences should have been much longer. They got off light.

      • Real Talk says:

A mistake is transferring money into the wrong account or forgetting to put a parking voucher on your car… Ingesting drugs into your body in exchange for $$$ isn’t a ‘mistake’, it’s a conscious decision and comes with consequences.

      • Who What When says:

What do you mean it was a mistake, did’t one of the gurls get caught for drugs in the past. This was not her first time and if they were on de Charter flight that means they are avoiding flying through the US because what they have previous records….??? And if you have a record aren’t customs going to look at you even harder? They were FOOLs. And didn’t learn their lesson the first time….

      • Grizz says:

sorry not a mistake!! Didn’t you read that she was locked up in Miami in 2007 for the same thing….NO NOT A MISTAKE….STUPIDITY

  11. Terry says:

Well you know a “Mule” is first cousin too an Ass.

This gives another new meaning to “R&R”…

    Rectum Resin.

    • Pete says:

Well you know a “Mule” is first cousin too an Ass.

That pretty much sums it up Terry.

    • White Jesus says:

@Terry Most of the time you make no damn sense to anyone but yourself, but this time I have to say you made me chuckle. Well you were doing good until your rectum resin line. Lol

  12. Terry says:

Listen up here “007″…..We can call you James, right? James, I have seen people die from doing this. Some did’nt give a ‘crap’ and didn’t have one and died a painfull death due too the toxins in their bodies.

Stupid women for doing this. To a degree they are lucky to be alive.

  13. Geza Wolf says:

Terry..Cannabis resin will never kill anyone.

  14. White Jesus says:

Did anyone else see how they both look like they are wearing police hats in the photo?
The police officers are standing directly behind them. Quite amusing!

  15. College Graduate says:

Dumb ppl keep smart ppl rich

  16. Spikes says:

I know the women deserve whatever sentence they receive, but don’t you think the police should have waited until they made their drop off in order to catch the bigger fish? That’s policing 101.

    • ok says:

@ Spikes…..Read the article before you start on your Police rants! Customs pulled them aside not the police. So take a break and stop pretending you know what youre talking about…

      • @ “OK” stop trying to be smart and sarcastic…yes Customs may have pulled them over but the POLICE would have laid the charges (as the article states they were called)…duhhh! SO ACT LIKE YOU KNOW!!! and yes I agree with Spikes why aren’t the Police allowing them to make the deliveries and catch the big FISH? the BPS might be doing a great job but they”re just catching the “GUPPIES”…

  17. The Man In Love With Miss O'Brien! says:

Ay one I gotta say is [edit] all you haters! None of you know these young ladies on a personal note so all this bad mouthing needs to [edit] stop! Grow the [edit] up, this is life we all go thru trials & tribulations!

And most of the story on here is totally different from what was said in court!!!

    • omg says:

If the love is so great, why didn’t you discourage her,,,,oops did she do it for love??????????

    • Speechless says:

Haters? LOL! Yeah – we’re all jealous that we cant be spending the next couple of months in jail – imbecile! Noone cares about how wonderful they are. They are convicted drug dealers!

‘And most of the story on here is totally different from what was said in court!!!’ – HUH!?!?! Tell me, was the part where your beloved swallowed weed (of all things weed – not even worth doing it for weed) planning to ‘pass it’ at a later date untrue? People – just think where that weed came from the next time you spark up!

    • Dragging A Lure says:

To: The man in Love with Miss O’Brian,
Personnaly I think your response indicates that you are a poor excuse of a man and probably in love with the cannibus resin storage box.

    • Are you an IDIOT says:

Please dont be so ignorant. What are you one of their little 42nd friends. Do you smuggle drugs in with them. Please dont belittle yourself. Its 2011 WHO in their right mind will go and bring in drugs for $2500 per person. Thats just stupid. What will that money go to. Youre saying we dont know the girls. Its CLEAR the girls dont know themselves or their value. Freedom must not mean anything.

    • The Baddest says:

I agree!! yall dont know them or what is really behind why they did this!! who are you The man inlove with Miss O’brien??…I havent meet you yet! lol

  18. truesay says:

I am tired of young black females getting bad names cause of the few idiots like these ones. It is 2011 who does this anymore?! Really learn from others!

  19. Just a Thought says:

  20. It Is What It Is? says:

@ “OK” stop trying to be smart and sarcastic…yes Customs may have pulled them over but the POLICE would have laid the charges (as the article states they were called)…duhhh! SO ACT LIKE YOU KNOW!!! and yes I agree with Spikes why aren’t the Police allowing them to make the deliveries and catch the big FISH? the BPS might be doing a great job but they”re just catching the “GUPPIES”…

    • help us says:

Well, the police had no physical evidence of these girls having drugs on them until they were x-rayed. So even if they followed them, once they broke into the home of “Mr. Biggs” they still would not have a case against “Biggs” unless he was caught with the drugs in his possession. At the point of the raid these girls would have still had the drugs inside of them. Also, I’m certain that the cops asked them who they were transporting for but as you can see, these girls aren’t too swift and obviously chose to do the time instead of rolling over. Bermuda already has far too many mindless followers so please tell me why would we wanna legalise the use of weed?!?!

    • Elizabeth says:

Ease her up…Desiree has been through alot, i’m hoping a social enquiry was conducted, and if so, counseling provided for her while in jail. She recently buried her son who died a few days after birth – LOOK closer people, she has been taken advantage of, and I know we don’t like to bring size to the forefront, but majority (not all) of obese people crave acceptance and sometimes at any cost, and their false confidence they project will be confirmed in the poor judgements they make.(perhaps such is this case). and her award winning court-smiles did not fool me… for sure I too, initially wondered where was “the shame” but on second glance, it was clear she could be use to smiling – camouflaging her pain and rage. I’m not suggesting we play the violins or sing a song that “nobody knows the troubles ….” but, in my opinion counseling is a necessity; Clearly she is a receipe for self-distruction, most would have thought twice about doing this AFTER just getting off in Miami (from what i understand – few people do)! It’s possible that Judge and I see her through the same lens. Personally agreeing to do this for 2,500.00 alone qualifies for some sort of a head examination and there I REST MY CASE

      • itwasn't me says:

@ Elizabeth…..there are so many broken young women on this rock. We have serious social problems that stem from ‘hidden’ family issues. The affect is life long.

      • Grizz says:

Please Elizabeth don’t make excuses for Desiree and before you say it YES I KNOW HER QUITE WELL!! Yes, she did recently bury her son but Desiree had already been caught for doing this dumb chit so her son dying is no excuse for this dumb crap she did. And using the fact that her son died as an excuse to do something this stupid would be an insult to his memories. She obviously didn’t learn the first time.

  21. TothefoolinlovewithMrsOBrien says:

    To Yung Infamus,
How could you sit here and defend to true two defintion of 2 fools. They put jah and Nadanjah to rest, this is complete ignorance, to be convicted of the same offence twice and you still sit her rembling on that everyone makes mistakes, that is no mistake that is utter foolishness. & to think the little bit of money they did it for cant even go and purchase transportation no money to make a better living for themselves. Go get a damn job, im sure Desiree was maing more money at Mr Chicken, & else for Shaniqwa never known her to hold a 9-5. Think about what you are saying stop limiting to yaself to a box and expand ya mind cause you are no not making nothing of sense or importance.

SMH… Only One Can Judge & That’s The Almighty GOD!!!

  23. Give it a break says:

Are you serious Yung Infamous – You think that these two women are the only people in Bermuda that are / have had stuggles! I am so tired of this crap give it a break – there are many peopl in Bermuda – male/femae, white/black/whatever young/old who are or have had struggles and they choose NOT to do these things! Get an education before you go one trying talk like you know something. EVERYONE struggles!

    • YunG InFamus says:

For your information I have an education and a well paying job so where are you tryna go with this?
Like I said before I just want everyone to stop passing judgement on others, for the simple fact that we do not live the lives of others to know what is going on! We all have skeletons in our closets but yet we’re quick to judge someone on the things they do with their life, [edit] that! Live your own and stop downing others!

  24. Dumbies says:

Are you serious Yung Infamus?! Judging!? Please shut up and make sense, no one has to judge they have been CONVICTED! Do you really know them because if you did you would know that they have been CONVICTED drug mules!! how are we judging, we are simply stating facts!

PAH-LEASE QUIT THE EXCUSES! THEY ARE SAD.
