17 Swimmers To Compete In Carifta

April 19, 2011

Bermuda will have 17 swimmers participating in the XXVI CARIFTA Swimming Championships being held April 23-26, 2011 at Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Barbados.

National coaches Richard Goodwin and Ben Smith said today: “A large number of our senior swimmers have “aged out” of this competition and with only 3 swimmers remaining from the 2010 team we are encouraged by the number of new swimmers who are joining the team for the first time. This is a good indication that the development of swimming in Bermuda is strong, and we hope to continue our good results of the past”.

National Coach Richard Goodwin stated: “This will be the first Long course (50 meter pool) meet for the season for these athletes and we hope that all the hard work that they have been doing will pay off at Carifta. Many of these swimmers have recently participated in an overseas training camp in Florida where they were exposed to 50 meter training in the morning and 25 yard training in the evening. I believe the team is focused and well prepared to perform their best at this meet.”

National Coach Ben Smith says: “We can expect to see our past medal winners Emma Franklin and Ashley Yearwood performing at a high level and we are looking forward to see how all the new faces will react to such fast competition. The atmosphere at past Carifta’s has been electric and it is always exciting to see how our athletes react to the pressure of the International stage. Success with this team will be based on personal best times and what they can learn by competing against the best swimmers in our region.”

Both National coaches Richard Goodwin and Ben Smith will be accompanying this year’s team and the team will be managed by Pam Froud and Teresa Gariepy.
