The PTA felt that with the recent rash of violence, it was time for them to step in and create an event that would strengthen the community and get back to how things were done in the past.

One of the organisers said, “Many of our Bermudian children are not familiar with how Bermuda Kites are even made and the PTA thought that this would be a great way to bring back and revive a dying art. A little part of our history if not passed on will surely be lost. There were several men from the community who all volunteered to come in and do demonstrations of making old Bermuda Kites.”

“All of the men were past students of the Purvis Primary. There were guest appearances by the” Kite Master” Mr. Eugene O’Connor and the Belco Bird. There were some 250 people who attend the event. The PTA gave out free drinks and food for all who came. They even had an Easter egg hunt for the children. The event was made possible through the generous donations of Belco , Hunts Food and supplies, Lindos, Phoenix , Butterfield Trucking, Barritts and AV Communications.”

A dying art? Huh. I’ll be teaching Bermuda Kite making to a bunch of 8 year olds at my daughter’s school in California in a couple of weeks. It may be dying in Bermuda, but it’s alive and well here!
