[Updated with videos] AirTran’s inaugural flight from Atlanta landed at LF Wade International Airport this afternoon [May 26], carrying 20 of the cheerleaders from the Atlanta Falcons Football Club who flew in for their annual swimsuit calendar photo shoot. They are pictured below along with Minister of Transport Terry Lister.

In addition, a delegation from the Buckhead Coalition in Atlanta arrived on board the flight to exchange formal proclamations making Bermuda a “sister community.”

Departing passengers in Atlanta took part in a lively celebration at the airport featuring Bermuda’s traditional Gombey dancers, a steel drum band, and a “Touchdown Bermuda” performance by the Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders.

Bermuda is the latest destination in AirTran’s international route network, which includes: Aruba, Cancun, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Nassau, Bahamas and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Atlanta becomes the second city in AirTran’s network to offer nonstop service to the island. The low cost carrier began offering flights to Bermuda from Baltimore last month.

“We are excited to partner with AirTran Airways in providing new service to our island,” said Minister Minors. “Atlanta is a wonderful US city with many Bermuda fans, friends and family residing there. We are happy that this service will help continue to build a relationship while offering travelers an easy escape to Bermuda.”

When the AirTran Atlanta-Bermuda service was announced earlier this year, the Gombeys performed at Atlanta’s Peachtree Centre as part of a Bermuda Department of Tourism promotion.

To quote Vin Diesel in xXx: “The things I do for my country.”

  7. PEPPER says:

Patrice..is such… why are we spending so much for the gombeys to promote Bermuda…. look at the Peach tree mall and se these clowns perform !!!!!

  8. Salt says:

pepper: gombeys are our heritage, ask Louise Jackson. I don’t agree with the PLP on many of occasions, but bringing a low cost carrier to complete with Delta high airfares is a welcomed addition! Great Job Ministers. don’t let the OBA detractors detract you all.

  9. Don't Believe The Hype.. says:

You ever notice how nice the arrivals area is and how dingy, stank and crappy the departures area is at the airport?? This is no diamond in the ruff’ destination bie!!
Smoke and mirrors and I say the fanfare is over already.. ain’t no one flying to Bermuda for $400 room, $200 dollar lunch and a chance of getting popped!!!

  10. db says:

Ok Bermuda let be real how much us go to ATL. And how much of us travel too Orlando FL. Time and effort would have been better spent trying to get another direct flight to Orlando. But a good piss poor try PLP. Piss Poor Labour Party.

    • Wow says:

Hahahha! You clearly need to check your arrival numbers. LOTS of Bermudians fly into Atlanta. Any idea how many are in school there? And, besides, any hub (like Atlanta) is going to draw folk. Duh. You can get to anywhere from Atlanta. Take a business class (or two) about pricing and supply and demand. Delta holds a monopoly on travel to and THROUGH Atlanta. This will, hopefully, provide a more affordable alternative so that we don’t have to pay these sky high (no pun intended) Delta prices and, in turn, cause Delta to lower their prices.

    • Hmmmmm says:

This has to be the most ignorant thing I’ve ever read on here. Orlando ?! A seasonal, direct service to Orlando was tried a few years ago by US Airways. It was full of Bermudians heading for the great cultural mecca of Disneyworld. As Delta how much money they made off Bermuda and Bermudians over the last several competition-free years. You need to get out more.

  11. Think about it says:

And just like that, everyone forgot about the Miss Bermuda Pageant girls Lol

    • Disgusted!! says:

      @ Think about it.

I don’t know what has you so salty about the Miss Bermuda Contestants and pageant as awhole but your negativity is getting REALLY old. It is no surprise that our goverment has decided to throw our money away on cheerleaders (paying for their room/board etc) instead of a positve community event that can give our island exposure on an international level (at Miss World). They do this on a regular basis. The community as whole will have to lead by example and rally behind these ladies even if our govt can’t bother to support!

      • Think about it says:

How would bringing the Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders here NOT give us exposure? Are you kidding? Next thing you know, the Cowboys, Lakers, Celtics etc. cheerleaders would want to do a shoot here, and then maybe the athletes and their entourages will come and blow their money. This has the potential to bring more money into this island than invest in some rinky-dink pageant.

I don’t have an issue with the pageant by the way, I was making a joke. If what I say bothers you so much DON’T read my posts and DON’t reply to them.

      • Nicole says:

How is he being negative? He clearly put “lol” at the end.

        • Disgusted!! says:

Nicole “SHE” wasn’t joking. That hiefer “think about it” is always coming on bernews talking smack about the pageant and the ladies that signed up to be a part of it so it’s not out of character for her to use a completly unrelated story to spit more venom.
And if you for one minute think that a bunch of cheerleaders with sparkly pom poms are going to miraculously boost tourism and increase revenue than you are as sorry as this tourism campaign. And yes I do believe it would make sense for goverment to sponsor Miss Bermuda who will be an ambassador for OUR island when she travels overseas unlike the Atlanta Falcon Cheerleaders!

  12. LOL (original) says:

Why is Zane hanging out with the Cheerleaders is this some how health related??

Cheerleaders keep you young I guess. Keep working hard Zane…………………………

    LOL

    • crazytalk says:

yeah, I noticed that. The Minister for Health apparently has to show up and personally welcome the visiting cheerleaders. Glad to see him working hard for the common man and all that.

      • Rob says:

Minister Desilva was there to Promote Breast Awareness Month. I hope he took gloves.

  13. HMMMM says:

Forget about politricks….where are the cheerleaders hanging out? Judging by Mr. Lister’s smile, he’s not worried about politics right now either, so lets ALLLL welcome the cheerleaders to our island, but first lets find them :) ))))))
