BWS: No Notification of Earthquakes Today

June 12, 2011

chart pink[Updated] Bernews has received reports of the ground shaking and/or rumbling noises at approximately 5:30am this morning [June 12], both via email and our Facebook page.

People have reported feeling shaking in areas including Warwick, Somerset, Pembroke, Southampton and Spanish Point.

One person described it as “a deep continuous rumbling sound that had a steady volume,” which lasted about 15 to 20 seconds long.

Responding to our queries, the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] said they have “not received any notifications of earthquakes or tsunamis today.”

Neither the U.S. Geological Service nor the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre list any seismic activity in the Bermuda region today. The activity that appears to closest to us was a 3.0 magnitude earthquake in the Puerto Rico region today.

Meteorologist Ken Smith of the BWS said, “Bermuda Weather Service does not monitor earthquake activity, though we do routinely receive notifications of earthquakes and tsunamis from the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska, which has monitoring responsibility for our region (we are the tsunami warning focal point for Bermuda).”

“We have not received any notifications of earthquakes or tsunamis today. Also, I have checked the U.S. Geological Service website, and find no indications of any activity in our area.”

“If there was a rumble this morning, perhaps it was too minor to register. In any event, since earthquakes are not really the realm of expertise of the weather service, please refer to the U.S. Geological Service website for more up to date and accurate information.”

Checking the listing of recent earthquakes on the U.S. Geological Service website does not show any activity close to Bermuda. The listing on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s website also does not list any earthquakes in our region.

Locals will recall that on April 18th, there was a 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake at 12:38 local time, which estimated to be 50 miles west of Bermuda. Bermuda has also experienced other small earthquakes through history including one on March 24, 1978 and one on October 25, 1883.

We have asked other officials for comment, and will update with additional information as able.

Unfortunately for me I was awake around 5:30 and did hear a rumbling type of noise, I put it down to a truck driving through the neighborhood at a ridiculous time of day.

  3. Catherine DL says:

I was woken up by this tremor at 05:33. When I got up to check the earthquake reports and found nothing reported, I managed to convince myself that I had imagined the whole thing. Glad I am not going mad

  8. Rockfish says:

I heard it and thought what ahole was driving his truck on the road this hour, and had the nerve to speed – it better be important as it disturbed my rest – UP Somerset. But didn’t feel it – live up on a hill.

  11. OMG says:

Oh my goodness! I was awoken this morning by a loud, rumbling noise and it was around 5:30 ’cause I was annoyed thinking should I bother going back to sleep for just an extra half-hour as I usually get up at 6. I thought ‘what was that?’ It didn’t sound quite like a truck…I actually thought ‘I hope a wall isn’t collapsing’ or something like that.

This is kind of scary. Wonder what it was???

    • OMG says:

BTW-I’m in Hamilton Parish and I heard it there.

  12. Stefan Smith says:

I was awake and heard and felt it in the Khyber Pass Warwick area!

  13. mangrove tree says:

We were awake and heard it, then finding nothing onine reported it to the U.S earthquake site. They show one south of Boston. Was this the same one felt locally or a more local one I wonder?

  14. Jan says:

Ok so I wasn’t the only one. I was babysitting and I am a very light sleeper when watching them. As soon as I felt the room move I jumped up and was like no not again and started to pray. The tremor lasted for about 20secs and I at first I thought it was a heavy truck in the area but that thought went out the window when I got up and felt how my room was shaking. I went on facebook and BB and did not see any updates so I just told myself it was a dream. The Bermuda Weather Service does not monitor earthquakes? Um… I dont like the sound of that :(

  15. they're coming says:

don’t worry, the usgs did not register any quakes any where near bermuda when it is alleged that it occurred.

it was just the aliens coming to check on us, their engines are very powerful when idling. that’s why it did not register as an earth-born quake, because it was sky-born.

  16. lou says:

Here is probably it didn’t show up: “Latest Earthquakes Magnitude 2.5 or Greater in the United States and Adjacent Areas and Magnitude 4.5 or Greater in the Rest of the World – Last 7 days” on the US Geological site. Only if it is 4.5 and higher for us.

  17. Sandra says:

I heard the noise on Sunday early morning and thought it was thunder but no rain or lightening followed so I put it down to an “unknown sound”. I checked the website for earthquakes and we are not mentioned as having one so what gives? Either way we should be aware…small or eventually big, an earthquake is a force to be reconned with!

You better hope the U.S. Government is not messing around with H.A.A.R.P. If you don’t know about H.A.A.R.P then you really need to educate yourself. Here is a start. Read on…
