Local Equestrians Training At Virginia Farm

July 21, 2011

Local equestrians Patrice Swan and Jaeda Smith are currently in Culpeper, Virginia, and have just completed two weeks at HITS Culpeper with Ms Swan coming away with Champion at the Showday National and Reserve Champion at the Cavalier Classic.

During the coming week they will help out at the Grand Prix in Virginia, and will also be participating in a freestyle dressage event in Richmond – which will have them make up their own dressage test to music and design their own costumes.

They will be spending the summer showing at the Culpeper International Shows “HITS” and the CVSJA shows, and learning horsemanship skills in other disciplines.

They will undertake a multitude of activities while staying at Hunting Valley Farm in Virginia; learning to ride cutting horses, and working on the mechanical cow learning aids to turning their horses to follow the cow. They will also view an equine operation behind the scenes.

Patrice and Jaeda will also be working with blacksmith Gary Shifflet, learning hoof management and different reasons for different shoeing techniques – pads, bars, and corrective shoeing, as well as pulling a nail out of a shoe.

There will also lessons in proper flatting without stirrups, as well as jumping lessons every day except Monday. Each rider is assigned a horse for their stay that they will be showing.
