Vacationers Targeted By Handbag Snatchers

July 7, 2011

Police responded to a reported handbag snatching in the East End last night [Jul. 6].

Two American visitors, a husband and wife, were riding a rental cycle along Stables Lane, St. George’s, when two unknown men rode up alongside them, snatched a handbag from the woman’s shoulder and rode off.

The couple attempted to catch up with the suspects, but they made good their escape along Paynters Road. The visitors were not injured.

The two suspects are described as being two black men in their early 20s, riding a dark-coloured motorcycle.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident, in particular any taxi drivers who were in the Paynters Road area between 5 and 6 pm and who may have seen the suspects in this matter, to contact DC Jason Trott at 295-0011.

The Bermuda Police Service encourages road users to be vigilant in spotting any suspicious activity while travelling on the island’s roads.

Bermuda Police also advise that, when possible, riders should secure their personal belongings in the compartment under the seat of the motorcycle.

      • Notorious says:

With a name like “ganja mon” you should crack open a thing called the “dictionary” and look up what the word means first. I’m not a low life drug addict like YOU.

      • LOL (original) says:

Nah she’s all mouth and nothing else…………………….

        LOL

        • Notorious says:

          LOL

  3. Kim Smith says:

Oh Bermuda! Your days are numbered. I wonder what people think will come of the various faces of the Government’s “pay-back project”… of which this is one little part. Can’t you see you are cutting off your nose to spite your face?

  4. March Hare says:

Just to be clear – this incident took place in the part of St. George’s Parish that is South-West of the causeway near the Tucker’s Point (formerly Castle Harbour) Hotel.

    • BermyGuy says:

And your point is ???????? The fact is that it happened in Bermuda which at last check spans from The Dockyard in the west to St. George’s in the east. I wish I was driving behind those criminals. Trust me they would have been under my car when the police arrived and I would have also had picture’s for Bernews.

    • Terry says:

      Thanks Les……

  5. Um jus saying! says:

I hope these cowards realize it won’t be long and they will be snatching food stamps from each other. They won’t need to wear dark visors. There won’t be any tourists, expats, guest workers, ships crew, air passengers, bus riders, left to steal from.Bye,bye Bermuda!

  8. Buzy says:

@ Um just Sayin with comments like that is the reason why Bermuda is in the state they are in now. Do you know that Overseas people read this news as well, just imagine if you where overseas and someone said that to you duhhhhhhhh. I don’t think that you will like that especially during your vacation, so even though it might sound dumb to you just put your self in that persons shoes and just imagine how they felt.

Also sometimes we have to stop and think of what we are posting on here because kids read Bernews as well. What happen to the days when people use to be together and look out for one another. What has my little Island Home called Bermuda come to with attitudes like that now i can see why the youth are the way are no postive vibes always negative.

    Peace & love

  9. relevant says:

Yes, it would be great if there were multiple communications to visitors who rent cycles to secure valuables under the seat or in a locked basket. Shops should consider not purchasing cycles with open baskets. Lets help prevent the crime before it even happens!!!

    • Terry says:

But there are, Relevent. That by no means stops a person from the deeds they do to steal.

  10. SL says:

So sad for our visitors. Our tourism is suffering now, we don’t need these hooligans roaming our streets and robbing tourists, or robbing anyone for that matter. Whenever i see tourist on rentals, i pray for their safety.

  11. US Observer says:

Again I will say this..a group of us are coming to Bermuda for Cup Match week. If anyone even tries anything or if we even suspect something is about to go down the culprits will get a beat down…you have been warned!!

    • US Observer says:

Ok I take that back…you will not be warned..

    • bermyshotta says:

      hahahah

    • bermyshotta says:

@ US observer – de wrong mentality to bring to a country dat u don’t reside in lmfao…good luck bra! you gonna need it

  12. Terry says:

    See “Beating of the Retreat”……were taking a beating….Images and facts don’t lie………..

Like the ole song says….”Just look across the Harbour and see the multie colored “FOR SALES”..and check the linen it’s stacked as high as bales…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

  13. VTMRaynor says:

My little advice to any visitors that I come into contact with, on that question “How is crime here?” I reply, if you dont do it at home please dont try it here. Yes there is crime here on the island not going to lie about that. So secure your belongings as best as possible. This little island so called ‘paradise’ can be hazardous. But on the whole it is a lot friendlier then most places. Don’t let your guard down. REALTALK!!

  14. Point Boi says:

I hope we’re proud of our boys….Cedarbridge mis-education, wafless parents and it’s govments fault

  15. Truth be Told says:

One thing people might not always agree with what I’m saying or understand it but I wear my heart on my sleeve in my post. I don’t see me continuing because of comments like the ones that started this tread. Get out of the division and stand up. Yeh I am part of organisations, partisan and non-partisan, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about the other side we just differ on some things.

This type of madness of snatching hand bags from tourist is a serious issue and yes precaution should be taken by our guest but this Is damaging. These people are a very big part of our bread and butter and if those who are doing this crap don’t realise that the less of them the deeper Bermuda sinks and they will have even less then the chance they think they have now to make anything of themselves, then they are to far gone and need to do much time up west so that they can come to terms with life and take part in numerous programs to get them thinking on reality.(Not for them just sitting behind bars doing nothing)

I know there are tourist that would defend their own so I couldn’t tell them not to do anything to defend themselves because I know their nature is to protect what’s theirs. But don’t look for it to happen because when you do that that’s what can cause unnecessary conflict because you’ll be on your guard to tight. Just enjoy Bermuda and be aware of your surroundings. Rest assured you have many good people in Bermuda who if they could help it no harm will come to you.

We have to start looking at people as people and not as the side their sitting on. I can do better at that myself.

Bernews is the Best in news coverage in Bermuda amd we have to show them a little more respect.

  16. CanadianLuv says:

What a shame… I am planning my destination wedding in Bermuda. Now definitely reconsidering… the safety of my guests..etc. For a luxury destination Bermuda is really dropping the ball with security for its tourists.

    • shamel says:

you’re still much safer than in most other island destinations where you may even not be advised to leave your hotel complex….nothing like that in Bermuda!

  17. US Observer says:

@ bermyshotta – I like your name actually. We are probably cousins so no disrespect. I still hold in my hands a valid and burgandy passport. Go Bermy!!

  18. wondering says:

    Okay…….simple solution time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most rental bikes have a under seat compartment. Why the devil don’t tourists put their belongings under the seat. If I can’t see it I probably won’t steal it. Why do we have decades of robberies on Pitt’s Bay Road (classic) and handbag snatches under the same circumstances. Why do we have to even entertain this?!?! Be safe and smart. Put your belongings under the seat!

Cycle Liveries – Invest in a closable basket with a lock!!

    • wondering says:

And I am not blaming the tourists but c’mon……don’t do in Bermuda what you wouldn’t do in your hometown. Bermuda is no paradise- just a more beautiful place than most people could ever dream to live in…we are still human beings in this country who have pressures that cause us to want to steal – and I don’t condone stealing either.

      • YES MATE! says:

I have pressures on me but I don’t want to steal, and won’t. How many of these tourists ride a plastic motorscooter at home?

  19. SWEETBLACK says:

We have got to do more to protect our tourist from things like this happening. Do these thugs realize if just one tourist goes home and tells someone what happened and that person tells another and so on no more tourist are gonna want to come here, and than what?

  20. Mr T says:

I wouldn’t waste your money on a wedding in Bermuda not if reading some of these comments is anything to go by ….there appears to be too many excuses and for the low life thieves ……poor people, and Bermuda thinks it can stand alone without British support……..how amusing
