Video: Senator Furbert Endorses Lefroy House

July 14, 2011

Senator Laverne Furbert yesterday [July 13] answered concerns about the state of Lefroy House raised by OBA spokesperson for Seniors and Social Services/Financial Assistance, Louise Jackson.

Senator Furbert said ” From visiting there on a weekly basis while my mother was there, I know that Lefroy House was constantly upgraded”

Senator Furbert continued, “I visited Lefroy House prior to 1998 and I know the state of Lefroy House as it was then and it’s certainly 100% better now”

    • Black Soil says:

Lefroy House is nothing but another BHC. The governor should order that it be inspected by the Auditor General, both physically and financially. Paula Cox won’t do it. She refuses to do anything that might bring the PLP into harms way. If the govt of “pre 1998″ had banned the then shadow minister of health from entering Lefroy House, there would have been a riot.

    4 miles east of Charleston…..winds NE 12 kts/port tack mainsail up/reefed……..

  3. LOL (original) says:

Wonderful! Now can the PLP fix the 60million $ peir they built……………………

    LOL

    • Cleancut says:

let Brown and Correia take care of the dock, there must be a few million dollars left in the kitty.

  4. Terry says:

Just tied up. Love your comment LOL (original spicy)………Having a dark and stormy…..

“peir”………To what and too whom are you refering. Hell the ‘Peers’ can’t even build a Pier…..bwahaaaaaaaaaa.

Then again, if you need a Correia in Desilverization, Ewart has a See Det Bar project going on in Hindia…….Then again….it was only a “Generic” Doc……..

  5. Terry says:

Respect where respect is due. I am sure Ms.Furberts Mother spent quality time there in her final years. But with all the monies Ms. Furbert had/has why not find somewhere else for her Mother. Her presentation in the video looked like she was more defensive of Goverment that the prior needs of habitants.

  6. Common Sense says:

The last time I passed Lefroy House there appeared to be a tree growing out of part of the roof and sections of the building appeared to be semi-derelict. There was supposedly a total of $19 million dollars assigned for repairs and major upgrading back in 2007 but some residents were moved out and have still not been allowed to return.

We need to know what has happened to the money and what is holding up repairs and renovations. We need to know, for example, just what has been renovated and how much it has cost so far. That information should be readily available, and we the tax paying public have a right to know. Mrs. Jackson has stated that the administration offices have been taken care of, and that money has been wasted on furniture that is totally unsuitable such as chairs that are too close to the floor.

What is shameful is the fact that the Shadow Minister of Seniors was barred from entering Lefroy House. This smells of cover up in every sense of the word. We constantly here about “transparency” but on this issue it simply does not exist. What should happen is that Louise Jackson should be invited to visit Lefroy House. She should be shown throughout the whole building, so that she can see for herself all of the “constant upgrading” referred to by Senator Furbert, and what has been done or not done, and see for herself whether the furniture is suitable. She should also have any of her questions answered clearly and truthfully. There should be nothing to hide at Lefroy House.

Sorry to say this, but attacking the Shadow Minister because she raises concerns about the care of our seniors, is not the answer. The answer is truth and transparency.

    • PEPPER says:

Lavern is a sick puppy !!!how the hell the cog appointed her as a senator is beyond me and others …Lefroy house is disgusting…so again where is the transparecy ? I would not put my beloved dog there !!!! Louise Jackson is not afraid of any of you defenders of the present government….and why was she barred from entering this run down facility ? and now we are going to give these poor seniors generic drugs from India of all places !!!and hope they die sooner than later ………what a caring government..

  7. Senors 1st. says:

Seniors needs to be respected and protected. Smoke screens does not help the situation. Louise should be allowed to visit but she should not use the opportunity to shame and blame just for political points. She should visit and make constructive assistance if she cares about making the seniors lives better. She is a upper middle class senior and bringing her upper middle class attitude into every situation does not help the seniors in need. She needs to leave that elitist outlook at the door better yet, park it up in her fairylands constituency.

    • LOL (original) says:

What in your mind would be “constructive assistance” in this as anything she says about it wold be taken like an “elitist outlook”. She is not part of the PLP after all so really what would you do in her shoes in this matter? Just woundering S1.

      LOL

      • LMAO says:

Constructive Assistance would be for Ms. Jackson to offer to help and not report to the media all the negative about Lefroy! We all have skeletons and, “didn’t your momma teach you that you don’t need to air your dirty laundry all d while?!!?”

        • Tired of nonsense says:

          Censorship is not the answer.

$22mn of our money has been allocated to Lefroy House.

We have the right to know if it has been spent wisely or if it has been spent at all.

        • LOL (original) says:

So you would like her to shoulder the costs again herself as a private citizen when all of Bermuda has paid for it already and it’s still not fixed. Hey can you pay for my potion of the debt by paying my pay deductions that would help me a lot while your at it since you do so much.

          LOL

          • LOL (original) says:

Is the rich PLP ministers pay out their own pockets to fund anything that is helping all of Bermuda………………………

            LOL

  8. Face the Nation says:

I certainly wouldn’t allow My Mother to live anywhere unless it was 100% … Sorry but thats just me ..

    • NO OBA says:

Some people don’t have as much choices as you. Most of them can hire foreign caregivers.

      • Common Sense says:

I am not a member of the OBA (or the UBP) so I’m not playing politics, and I’m not so bothered about wealthy folks who can afford foreighn caregivers. My concern is those seniors who are likely to end up spending their final days and months at Lefroy House. Louise Jackson has raised the warning flag and we should all hear her concerns and support her in her efforts to open the curtains at Lefroy House so we can look in to see how our non-wealthy seniors are being cared for. In this case Mrs Jackson is fighting for the well being of our not-well-off seniors. To call her elitist is a nonsense. It would be elitist if someone has purchased furniture for seniors at Lefroy House without bothering to make sure that it is comfortable for their use. On the issue of Lefroy House we need answers – not vitriolic attacks on the one person who is asking the right questions.

    • Just saying!! says:

      I agree with you 100%
Honor thy mother and father to the end.

  9. Scott says:

why the F is senator furbert always the one to “answer concerns” or reply to opposition MPs?? do they not have ministers that are in charge of these various departments for a reason?

    • LOL (original) says:

Have to justify her post some how.

      LOL

  10. 32n64w says:

Mrs. Fubert’s personal anecdotes and unrelated reference to her pre-1998 visit(s) offer nothing but a misguided smokescreen and do not even begin to answer the more important questions:

    1. Why did Lefroy House prevent Mrs. Jackson from entering a publicly owned facility?
    2. How much of the $19m allocation in 2007 has been spent and what was it spent on?
    3. What work remains to be done?
    4. When were the renovations plans prepared and submitted to Planning?

    • Rockfish#2 says:

      Electioneering!!

      • LOL (original) says:

“Why did Lefroy House prevent Mrs. Jackson from entering a publicly owned facility?”

Didn’t this also happen in the 2007 election in St. Davids at a housing project? PLP are scared to lose votes or something? If not then why not let the opposition in.

        LOL

  11. What is going on? says:

Looks like a guided tour for those in the know would be applicable. Where DID the money go that was allocated for this project….. can someone please answer that.
    Always excuses and no facts.

  12. Hudson says:

Ms Furbert – I’m glad you are satisfied with Lefroy House, and perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to stay there when you are old, grey and forgotten… You must respect however, that the public and the opposition has the right to ask questions and to set the bar higher than you seem to think is acceptable.

  13. Just saying!! says:

Did Zane – have anything to do with this pier???? We all know Ewart and Denise did.
Umm – maybe the engineers were taking generic drugs – Ummm???
Maybe Ms. Furbert is taking generic drugs. If not she should. Ummm

Lets test all the generic drugs to be brought into the island from India on the minister first.
