Corporation Workers Meet At Union Headquarters

August 16, 2011

The City of Hamilton today [Aug.16] confirmed that their unionized members met at the Bermuda Industrial Union headquarters this morning, returning to work after lunch.

Acting Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to the City of Hamilton, Mr. Gary Edwards declined to comment further saying, “The City of Hamilton has not yet received formal communications on this matter and accordingly we cannot comment further.”

Workers are unofficially said to be displeased with their colleague Michael Pond having lost his job recently. While working for the Corporation of Hamilton on a trash truck, Mr Pond slapped a 16-year-old girl who insulted him, and was fined $2,000 in Magistrates.Court.

Mr Pond, 43, said she walked across the back of the trash truck and said the ‘trash truck stinks and you stink.” He said she continued to insult him, and at one point insulted his mother saying: “Your momma’s p**** stinks like the trash truck’.”

Following his conviction, Mr Pond lost his job with the Corporation of Hamilton, a move seen as controversial in some circles. Earlier this month he received $2,754 in donations following a drive to raise enough funds to pay his fine.

Dock workers, bus drivers and prison officers are also said to be contemplating some form of possible industrial action, with dock workers presently on an overtime ban, bus drivers meeting yesterday, and prison officers unofficially said to be considering strike action.

Maybe Mr.Pond should apply for a job at the DEPT OF CORRECTIONS . Looking for a few good Man who’s not afraid to slap around defenseless little girls . I would totally and thoroughly lose what little respect I have for that Union IF they proceed to fight for that idiots lost job .

    • Cast a stone says:

Agreed! Should give him a run for his money!! Maybe she has a family member up there that can give him a bitch slap. Split his head to the white meat.

  6. desmodus rotundus says:

I do not condone Mr. Pond’s behavior but he was provoked and lost his temper, who knows maybe you and I would react in the same manner given the situation. However the justice system has fined him for his transgression. Why in the hell would you dismiss him from his job as well?????
I think more of theses gangster brats on the streets of Bermuda needs some ruffing up. If their parents cannot or will not do it, somebody’s got to it. Maybe then we will have less gunbangers and robbers outhere!
As for industrial action, we live in a democracy and it is not against the law to have industrial action. While some are scared of loosing there jobs and others are content with being victims, the rest of us will do what we have to…….Oh and I forgot still some others are sitting at home, retired, drawing a government check every month and have nothing better to do then criticize things they do not know anything of.

      • Cast a stone says:

        Agreed!!!

      • Translated for our Expat Friends says:

@ desmodus rotundus – His dismissal may be a result of Mr. Pond’s character falling short of the accolades he has thus far received. The incident occurred while Mr. Pond was performing his job duties while clearly being a representative of the CoH. As with any other position in any other industry a transgression as serious as violent behaviour cannot go unpunished, and termination is the standard penalty for an act of such gross misconduct.

      • desmodus rotundus says:

        @ bermyshotta

i would not throw that word around if i were you, idiot! you obviously dont know a thing about labour relations. please get some education…..

    • Diogenes says:

I guess the truth continues to be challenge. Fact: Mr. Pond lost his job weeks before the court case not after. His behaviour would have been considered gross misconduct. Fact: The union has the option of arbitration as the final stage of a grievance process but unfortunately it appears that historically they have avoided arbitration and opted to use threatening behaviour to enforce their way. This may be because the case to be presented to an arbitor would be too weak to win but then I might just be to cynical.
