Westgate To Host Arts & Craft Stall

August 29, 2011

On Friday, September 2, 2011, Westgate Correctional Facility will be hosting a stall in Dockyard which will sell arts and crafts made by its inmates.

The correctional facility has been working collaboratively with WEDCO for a while now and this initiative is finally becoming a reality.

Inmates have made cedar works, clothing and other wares which will be sold to the general public, with the aim to also sell items to cruise ship passengers. The stall will be operational from 9 am to 3 pm.

Funds from sales will go directly to the inmate’s accounts, to be used for their families or when they are discharged.

  1. THATS GREAT NEWS ALL THE BEST TO THE INMATE’S HOPE IT WORKS OUT FOR THEM!!!!!!

  2. what the hell says:

Wait an f…ing minute…so they broke the law…we house them, feed them, give them cedar to play with only to sell it back to us so they can make money….????
At least take 50% of the profit to pay for their stay in the West Gate hotel……-Jesus Christ….for all those without a job go commit an offense then you will not have any bills and can make some money on the side..

WTH…..its called preventing recidivism! We spend almost $80K a year to house a prison inmate! If we don’t equip them with ways to learn a trade, earn money, build self esteem and business opportunities while they are incarcerated, they will most likely end up in prison several times throughout their lifetime. Let them learn to be productive citizens and give them the values and tools to be part of the Bermudian community upon release!

      • what the hell says:

I don’t disagree with this…but like I said take at least 50% to pay for their new skills they have acquired through our tax payer funds. They then have at least a porfolio and some experience when they get out…don,t give them everything for free and then an opportunity to make money….bet that artwork won,t be extremely cheap when sold to tourists….

    • Your probably right says:

One thing it was not only for locals to buy but the tourist as well. In some sense I agree with this comment but although they committed a crime many still have families to take care of (children) if you think about then if they don’t do it we still end up paying for their children 6 of one thing half a dozen of another

Fantastic idea. A great way to encourage inmates to earn a living and make use of their time behind bars.
