Four Students Awarded UWI Scholarships

Erlier this year, a delegation from the Ministry of Education traveled to the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica to get a better understanding of the relationship created by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Bermuda and the University. As a result of that visit and the discussions held, the Ministry agreed to offer 4 undergrad scholarships and 1 graduate scholarship.

These scholarships represent 80% of the cost of tuition and are in place for the duration of each student’s academic program. The students are responsible for the remaining 20% of their tuition and any ancillary student fees, in addition, students must maintain good academic standing in order to keep the scholarship from year to year.

The recipients are:

• Ms. Tyka Edness who will be attending the University’s Mona Campus in Jamaica studying for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy;
• Ms. Amne Osseyran-Foggo who is currently enrolled at the Mona Campus and studying for a double Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery Degree preparatory to becoming a doctor;
• Ms. Asha Ratteray who will also be attending the Mona Campus to study for a double Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery Degree preparatory to becoming a doctor; and
• Ms. Latonae Smith who will attend the University’s Cave Hill Campus in Barbados to study for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality Management.

Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said, “The Bermuda-UWI scholarship is awarded under an agreement between Bermuda and the University, whereby the Ministry of Education provides scholarships for eligible students to attend the University.”

“Last year, three Bermudian students attended the University of the West Indies, one at each of its three main campuses, this year, thirteen  students applied to UWI. The Ministry has already heard from 3 students who wish to apply for next year.

“We are very pleased that Bermudian students are embracing this opportunity to attend UWI. UWI attracts students from around the world; it has articulation agreements with a number of international universities and boasts Rhodes Scholars and Nobel Laureates among its alumnae.
