At the Warwick Academy School Field Saturday [Oct.22], the first round of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union Club Sevens got under way in great conditions with Teachers and Mariners getting things started.

In a one sided affair, the pace and youthfulness of Teachers took over the experienced and forward dominated Mariners. In particular, Shauntino Simmons and Andre Landy were causing havoc in space with each running in tries. Teachers would run out eventual winners 29-0.

Next up, Renegades took on Police. The boys in blue raced into an early lead, scoring three unanswered tries for a 15-0 half time lead. Renegades stepped it up in the second half with tries from Ndavyah Williams and Ian Henderson, however the fight back was to be in vain as Police held on to win 15-12.

Renegades and Mariners were next up with both teams looking for their first wins. After a scrappy beginning, Renegades raced into a 19-0 lead with tries from Ian Henderson, Ndavyah Williams and Tom Healy. Henderson would add the extras with the boot.

The second half saw Mariners fight back and the seamen grabbed the only score of the second half, a lung busting 50 meter run from fit again speedster Dustin Archibald side stepping the Renegades cover to score in the corner. No scores would follow and the game ended 19-5.

The unbeaten Teachers and Police were next up. A close encounter saw Teachers edge it 14-7 to remain unbeaten.

In the penultimate match, Mariners losing streak continued as they were edged out by Police 17-14.

The last match of the day saw Teachers take on Renegades. Similar to Renegades first game, they decided to make things hard on themselves and give the opposition a 3 try head start. Teachers were more than willing to accept and scored tries through Jack Ellison, Patrick Richardson and Andre Landy.

In the second half, Renegades fought back with tries from Ndavyah Williams and Lewis O’Brien. With the last play of the game, the impressive Henderson outpaced the Teachers team to score in the corner to level the scores. Henderson had the difficult conversion to win the match from out with which he made with consummate ease. Renegades won 19-17.

Teachers, Renegades and Police all finished the day with records of played 3, won 2, lost 1. However due to a better points differential, Teachers took the round 1 spoils followed by Renegades, Police and Mariners.

After a break for some second XV action, the National Sevens Team took on a rest combined team. This would prove to be great preparation for the National Team ahead of upcoming Caribbean Seven’s Championships in November. Although the National Team ran out comfortable winners, they were pushed all the way by a stuffy rest team. With only a few weeks to go until the tournament in Barbados, the National Team are growing in confidence as they look to add the seven aside title to the fifteen aside title they won in July.
