‘Bermuda’ Book’s Local Launch Party

November 28, 2011

The official local launch of the new photography book “Bermuda” — which paints an intimate portrait of the island, its people and its culture — will be held next Monday [Dec. 5] at the Coral Beach Club.

Bermuda architect Georgia Crowe Benevides and her her photographer/writer friend Kathryn M. Deane — a life-long visitor to the island — were out kayaking on the South Shore in 2010 when they came up with a plan to raise money for some of their favorite local charities and to create some positive buzz for Bermuda internationally.

Their dream came to fruition in the form of the 220-page coffee table book Bermuda which features a heat-felt foreword by former celebrity resident Michael Douglas. Profits from the sale of “Bermuda” will be donated to The Family Centre, Masterworks, BIOS and The Audubon Society. The book was went on sale in the US last month, with fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer hosting launch parties at her Boston and New York boutiques.

“To me, Bermuda is such a timeless place,” Ms Deane told Lilly Pulitzer’s website recently. “I see photos of my parents sailing on their honeymoon in Bermuda in the 1950s; I remember exploring the island with my brothers and sisters in the 1960s and 1970s and bringing my children there in the 1990s. And now they are in college and love to come to the island to be with their family and friends.”

Ms Deane continued: “Bermuda has an enduring beauty both in the beaches and the water and in the life and vibrant culture. That’s what we tried to capture in the book — how Bermuda is such a great community made up of extraordinary people.

“It’s a place that truly has it all and the photographs we put in the book show how much there is to do and see there. There are incredible artists, business people, politicians, visitors & locals, museum curators, children & families, and scientists, all going about their lives in this place of breathtaking natural beauty.”

The Coral Beach Club launch party next Monday is being held from 5-8 pm. Members and non-members of Coral Beach are being encouraged to book for dinner at the South Shore club following the event.
