Chewstick’s Youth Poetry Club Relaunched

November 12, 2011

The Chewstick Foundation is relaunching its ChewSLAM: Teen Poetry Club today [Nov. 12], the programme it has piloted in Bermuda for the last two years.

ChewSLAM is a weekly programme in which where participants are given the opportunity to develop their writing, performance and even recording skills.

It is designed to help develop public speaking, community consciousness, collaborative skills and literacy, and most of all encourages young people to speak up about the things that matter to them most and to know that they are not alone.

“Chewstick strives to provide healthier ways for young people to express feelings of fear, love, loss and triumph, while building lasting friendships and surprising themselves with the beauty and power within — and this programme is our offering to do just that,” said a spokesman.

ChewSLAM takes place this afternoon from 2 to 4 pm at Chewstick’s Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe.

The programme is open to young people between the ages of 15 and 18.
