Bermuda Artist Is In Her ‘Elements’

December 3, 2011

Artistic harmony has long been defined as meaning the relationship between all the elements used in a composition is balanced.

Now Bermuda artist Lexy Correia [pictured] has interpreted this rule both literally and figuratively for her first solo show “Elements” which opens at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard tomorrow [Dec. 4].

The acrylic paintings on display  reference the four classical elements — Earth, Wind, Fire and Water — and how they harmonise with one another in nature.

Painter Mrs. Correia said she has long wanted to pursue a creative career and left her job as a corporate administrator earlier this year to do just that.

“I’d always been led to believe that you couldn’t actually paint for a living — unless it was the interior/exterior wall kind of painting,” she said.”In the past six years, I have been pursuing painting.

“But the one thing in any media I work in — be it textile, metal, clay or paint — that I’m completely secure with is colour. For that I am eternally grateful as I know so many struggle with it and are scared of it. Don’t be! All colouurs go together! Just go outside and look around. Nature doesn’t worry if this colour goes with that colour. How often have you gone to a public park and said, ‘Hmmm, that’s the wrong shade of green with those flowers’? Or looked outside your window and lamented that sunset needs to have a tinge more purple to make it spectacular? I doubt you ever have.

“You look in awe at the beauty of Mother Earth in those few moments you have taken the time to inhale what is there to see.

“I wish more people would slow down and truly observe instead of having their head down texting or ear phones on blocking the rest of the world out. There is so much to see and appreciate on a daily basis. To sound old-fashioned, take the time to stop and smell the roses.”

Sunday’s opening is from 5.30pm to 7.30 pm with Bacardi and the Bonefish restaurant providing beverages and hors d’oeuvres.

The Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard is also opening its Small Works Christmas show at the same time. Both shows run until January 12.

The Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
