Dockyard Arts Centre Hosts Workshops

They promise to be the surreal deals — the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard is hosting two workshops in the New Year taught by Philip Rubinov Jacobson  [self-portrait at left], a leading light in both the Fantastic and Visionary genres of art.

The artist, educator and author holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in painting, printmaking and sculpture, with studies in psychology, philosophy and comparative religion.

From 1973-74, he studied both old masters techniques of painting and printmaking. In 1978 he travelled to India where he studied meditation, yoga and Eastern philosophy.

His paintings have been exhibited internationally in more than 100 shows and his writings have been read worldwide. He is the author of “Drinking Lighting: Art, Creativity and Transformation” and Promoethean Flames: Rekindling and Re-visioning the Creative Fire.”

In 1981, Mr. Jacobson co-founded and directed what was the first Institute for Contemplative Art Education in the United States, located in upstate New York. In 1995, he founded and directed the School of Extended Studies at Naropa University in Colorado, where he served as Dean from 1991 to 1997.

He has been holding his renowned international summer painting seminars “Old Masters – New Visions” since 1997. His paintings have been acquired world wide by private and corporate collectors alike and most recently by the The Fantastic Art Museum of Vienna, at the Palffy Palace.

A Creatuitive Workshop
January 21, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

This hands-on workshop explores ways to expand and combine our creative and intuitive powers through a series of exercises including guided visualisation techniques and drawing.

The session begins with a power point presentation on the professor’s “creatuitive” approach to artistic sources of inspiration and culminates with a final feed back circle.

Art Salon – The Spirit of Art
February 4, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Traditional art salons have provided intimate settings for provocative discussions on art and society.

In the first half of the salon, Mr. Jacobson will open a discussion on The Spirit of Art with a power point presentation and readings from his first two books “Drinking Lightning” and “Promoethean Flames”.This will provide a means for participants to exchange ideas, question opinions and navigate through the wilderness of the contemporary art world.

The second half of the salon will be a feed-back session incorporating a non-offensive, anti-academic method devised by Mr. Jacobson which gives each artist the opportunity to have reflections and advice given to them in regard to their work.

Each artist is asked to bring in one of their original works for this purpose [although it is not necessary for participation]. The work can be “in-progress” or completed.
