Sailing: Day #1 Orange Bowl

Racing got underway for 9 Bermuda youth sailors yesterday on Miami’s Biscayne Bay in warm 76 degree weather with winds between 9 and 13 knots.

Owen Siese is the top local Laser Radial sailor, sitting in 13th place with finishes of 13, 16, 23,15. Next is Kalin Hillier in 16th followed by Mackenzie Cooper in 38th in the 99 boat fleet. The current leader is Mitchell Kiss from the Chicago Yacht Club followed by french sailor Pernelle Michon.

Ellie Wollmann and Hannah Horsfield are the lone Bermuda entry in the two person Club 420 class and they currently sit in 50th place in the 76 boat fleet with finishes of 40, 63, 55 and 37. The fleet leader is the team of Brendan O’Leary and Jack Schneider from Connecticut.

Chase Cooper is the top local Optimist sailor after 4 races and is currently in 60th place in the 203 boat fleet. Next is Mikey Wollmann in 99th place followed by Matilda Nicholls in 114th and Yannick Hillier in 120th. The leader is Long Island Sound sailor Will Logue who was the winner at this year’s Bermuda Open in November.

Racing continues through Friday although the forecast calls for cooler conditions in the 50′s and 60′s. The event is hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club and has 533 sailors entered, ranging in age from 8 through 18 and hailing from 23 states and 22 countries.
