‘Malcolm Is Smiling Down On Us’
Kaywell Outerbridge said her son was smiling down as family and friends gathered yesterday [Jan.6] to pay tribute to 18-year-old Malcom Outerbridge, who was murdered in October of last year.
A memorial tree planting ceremony to honour Malcolm’s memory was held at the Arboretum in Devonshire. And an ornamental garden in the park has been named after him.
The young Bermudian was killed just weeks after he returned to the island from a Raleigh International expedition to Borneo.
Founded in 2004, Raleigh International Bermuda uses overseas expeditions, local training and ongoing training to challenge young Bermudians to harness their full potential and develop skills for life.
“Malcolm joined Raleigh earlier this year,” Raleigh executive director Kristen White said at his funeral. “In his application, he said he wanted to part of it because he wanted to make a change in his life, and his attitude. To help him look at life in a different way.
The tree planting at the Arborteum:
“I feel very happy that I can stand here and say without doubt that Malcolm did that. He was so committed to the programme, and to himself to his future.
Concluded Ms White: “I’m sure that everyone that talked to Malcolm in the last few months saw what I did, what we all did at Raleigh –- a young man that was so motivated, and so happy, and so proud of himself.”
Former Anglican Bishop Ewen Ratteray delivered the prayer at yesterday’s tree planting ceremony and those in attendance included representatives from Raleigh International and the Young Mens Social Club
Malcolm’s mother and sister Malcishia Outerbridge [pictured above] helped to plant the Italian cypress and guests were invited to shovel earth around its roots in a symbolic celebration representing life, hope, growth and continuity.
Malcolm’s mother Kaywell Outerbridge expressed special thanks to Roger Parris from the Parks Department [also a close family friend] for the tree planting.
After the ceremony, Mrs. Outerbridge and others viewed an area of the Arboretum renamed “The Malcolm Outerbridge Memorial Garden” in her son’s honour.

Last November the newly renovated Paget Primary School library was dedicated to the memory of Malcolm Outerbridge at a ceremony attended by Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith. Malcolm had attended Paget Primary as a youngster.
Just after noon on 28 October 2011, police and paramedics responded to an assault in the Bulkhead Drive area of the Warwick Railway Trail. When officers and Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene, they found Malcolm had been seriously injured.
He was taken to the hospital via ambulance, but subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
On 2 November 2011 a 15-year-old teenager was charged with the murder of Malcolm Outerbridge, however police are still seeking assistance from anyone who have any information.
The Serious Crime Unit can be contacted on 295-0011, alternatively, anyone with any information regarding the murder of Malcolm Outerbridge can call the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477
