New Chief Nursing Officer Appointed
Ms Gaynell Hayward has been appointed to the position of Chief Nursing Officer at the Department of Health, effective February 1st, 2012.
Ms Hayward has served the Department of Health as Nursing Coordinator for Maternal Health & Family Planning for the past 12 years, and has been a long-time advocate for women’s health and social justice – both locally and internationally.
Ms Hayward is a Registered Nurse who previously worked as Assistant Coordinator of the Newborn Nursery and then Coordinator of the Maternity Ward & Neonatal Intensive Care at KEMH for over 22 years. Throughout her career she has collaborated with multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals to provide individualized care for families as they transition into parenthood.
In 1998 she trained as a forensic nurse and now volunteers as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) after obtaining certification by the International Association of Forensic Nurses. She presently coordinates the SART program.
She has served on numerous committees such as the Child Protection Team, The Bermuda Family Council, Well Bermuda and the Bermuda Nurses Association.
Her philanthropic spirit has led her to provide nursing care to the earthquake victims of Haiti and to lend her support to Africa through the establishment of the Hayward Community Orphanage Program in Kenya.
Ms Hayward has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Department of Health Work Balance Award and became the only recipient to be twice awarded the BNA Nurse of the Year Award (in 1998 and 2009).
In 2009 she was awarded the Ministry of Health: Public Health Professional Award in recognition of her contributions towards women’s health.
