WiFi Now Available In Dockyard

February 29, 2012

The West End Development Corporation [WEDCO] announced the launch of a WiFi network throughout the Dockyard area, providing high speed internet access to visitors and residents.

The service, the result of a joint initiative with TeleBermuda International Limited [TBI], will allow all cruise ship passengers, crew and Bermuda residents to email and surf the internet throughout Dockyard.

Any WiFi enabled device such as a smart phone, tablet, personal computer or digital audio player, can connect to the network via seamless access points installed throughout Dockyard.

WEDCo will also utilize the network to support surveillance throughout the area, enhancing security for visitors and businesses .

Walter Lister, Chairman of WEDCo said: “At WEDCo, we are continually looking for new ways to enhance our tourism product and make Dockyard a first class destination for locals and tourists. “The addition of WiFi, at globally competitive prices, positions us to be able to provide cutting edge technologies for all visitors within Dockyard.”

Gregory Swan, President and Chief Operating Officer of TBi said: “Dockyard is the perfect place to shop, have a good meal, relax, and surf the web. WiFi Network Access is becoming increasingly popular as people are demanding alternatives to traditional Internet connectivity”. “TBi is very pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with WedCo on this initiative

It would be great have large outdoor WiFi zones in Hamilton, as well, since I’m sure many business visitors would appreciate the service.

    • all clogged up says:

some other company that is no longer here tried that, and was shot down….so much for a laissez-faire economy……govt gotta loosen up and let horses run with their capital

  2. TJ says:

I know I would appreciate something like this in St Georges! And I defintely wouldn’t mind paying 29 bucks a month! That’s a good deal!

    • Internet abuse! $30 a month? While Bermudians pay an arm and a leg for internet! But yet Bermuda is still trailing way behind the world in internet speeds. Studies show that Bermuda is approx. in 80th place. Meanwhile we pay over 4 times more then the country in 1st place. hmmmm

  3. Chart says:

Now, tell me, if tourists can get internet for $30 a month, why does it cost me a couple of hundred at home? Hmm?

    • Union Member says:

The article doesn’t quote a $30 dollar a month charge, please read the article in entirety before falling for a commentors inaccurate facts which they are using to bash Bermuda. Well done WEDCO!!!

  4. Smh says:

Highspeed WIFI for all dem Westgate prisoners that managed to smuggle their Blackberry in a jail cell! WOOT WOOT!

  5. HOTMESS says:

This is amazing. TBI have been in Court for 4 months lamenting that Digicel has acted outside of their licence (offering Long Distance telephone services).

They now start offering Wi-Fi Services, this when it appears they do not have a licence that allows them to be involved in any ISP related services. What a Hot Mess !

TBI do you have a ISP licence that allow you to do ISP related services ? We would love to know.

The Ministry now have another hot mess on their hands. What will they do ? Digicel offers Long Distance, Cellone is now doing the same. TBI must have said, they are all messing around in our business, we will do the same…

The lunatics have taken over the asylum

    • JustHaveFaith says:

WEDCO and TBI should be ashamed of themselves and I think someone should look into this matter further.

Many of you are congratulating TBI but both WEDCO and TBI are in the wrong…

    • Mercy says:

In answer to your question, yes TBI have a license to offer ISP services. Dial, DSL and Dedicated internet are currently offered to commercial businesses. TBI have had this license since inception in 1996. This service is no different. Through the partnership with WEDCO this is perfectly within the current regulations. In fact TBI offer hot spot services on behalf of other businesses already.

Do your research first before typing.

      • CrAzY says:

mercey maybe I am “CrAzY” and don’t understand but TBI’s license allows them to provide service to a business but not to random people off the street which makes this a residential, so explain this to me.

In the meantime I am gonna have a drink and smoke and wait for your reply cause I wana be drunk and high when I read your “CrAzY” answer mercey.

God save us all and the prisoners too

        • Foolishness says:

“Through the partnership with WEDCO this is perfectly within the current regulations”

You are very crazy! And maybe cant read too.

        • Foolishness says:

          And for good measure

“In fact TBI offer hot spot services on behalf of other businesses already”

  6. Stating facts says:

Good luck with cruise ship passengers. Most of them have already paid for their ship board Internet services before they even get to Bermuda.

  7. Triangle Drifter says:

$10 for first day….expensive! At that price it had better be fast & it had better work. No excuses.

  8. The Hell!! says:

Bad News Bear. Those antennas on the light poles on Reid Street and through out Hamilton are for WIFI…

    • Bad News Bear says:

Thanks for letting me know. I work along Pitts bay Road so haven’t really noticed them.

  9. The Hell!! says:

The cost of Internet per month in Bermuda is criminally expensive…And they get away with it because government of course get there chunk…

  10. Malachi says:

    Good News!

I was just telling someone a few days ago that at some point in the future ALL internet will be free! Looks like we are moving in the right direction.

As I travel around Bermuda I find there are literally dozens of “Open” hot spots.

Hey, why pay when you can get it for free!

  11. Old Furberts kettle says:

    This is dumb.

  12. Triangle Drifter says:

Traveling across the US free WIFI can be found all over the place.

Any Mcdonalds, public librarys, many hotels are open, Lowes, Home depot, any of the chain restaurants, never mind driving through neighbor hoods & finding open WIFI.

A shame a free or low cost service is not available here in Bermuda in places like Dockyard & Hamilton.

  13. DoThisBermuda! says:

Free internet is not a way to increase tourism in dockyard. The key is to STAY OPEN late! I went there one day last summer and the place was a dead zone and it was only 7pm! If the stores don’t want to stay open late then allow vendors to set up shop (for free) just to keep the tourist entertained!

  14. star man says:

Has WEDCO LANDSCAPED the Heritage Wharf area yet? It needs SHADE TREES and FLOWERS!!!!

  15. toppa says:

yay!!. more unsafe levels of radiation people don’t know exist through wi-fi. convenient radiation…

  16. toppa says:

not only that, but really? you’re charging people wi-fi? when they could use their 3g phones for internet or wait, perhaps wait till they’re home to check the internet. only somebody that was out in dockyard all day with a laptop would want to use this. this sh*t is robbery

    • Foolishness says:

Actually, visitors from the cruise ship welcome it. They don’t have to pay expensive roaming charges to send instant messages or check email. And they don’t have to pay the internet charges on the cruise ship.
