Women’s Council Scholarship Fundraiser
In celebration of International Women’s Day 2012 and the theme: “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures”, the Minister of Youth, Families and Sports Glenn Blakeney, the Department of Human Affairs and the Bermuda Women’s Council, is encouraging the public to attend the launch of the “Extracurricular Scholarship for Girls” fundraising event on Thursday 8th March, 2012 at the Anglican Cathedral Hall, Church Street, Hamilton, at 12pm.
The event will feature the Head Girls from the Senior Schools on the Island who will be speaking on leadership and their time as Head Girl.
This lunch time fundraiser will be the first opportunity for funds to be raised for the scholarship. The Bermuda Women’s Council is inviting the public to purchase tickets ($10.00 each) for this event, and or make a donation toward the scholarship fund.
The Bermuda Women’s Council’s goal is to assist at least 5 girls with attending a Bermuda based extracurricular activity during the 2012 – 2013 school year.
The Bermuda Women’s Council believes that a scholarship toward extracurricular activities for girls is very important, as studies show that girls involved in extracurricular activities receive higher grades than those who are not involved in such activities and additionally, these activities have been shown to improve the overall student.
Minister Blakeney said: “Extracurricular activities also helps young girls with character building, teaches them lifelong skills, saves some who might otherwise drop out of school, and helps others develop appropriate social skills.”
For more information on how you can purchase tickets or make a donation contact Ms. Deborah Bradford at the Department of Human Affairs, dbbradford@gov.bm or 294-9734.
