Faulkenberry Attends ‘Superstar’ Preview
Bermuda’s Broadway belter Rebecca Faulkenberry was among a select group of actors invited to a special preview performance of the new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” New York’s Neil Simon Theatre on Monday [Mar.5].
Bermudian Ms Faulkenberry — who is starring as the title character’s love interest Mary Jane Watson in “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” – joined such Broadway veterans as Jonathan Warren and Betsy Werbel from “Wicked”, Andy Karl, Erik Bates, Quinn VanAntwerp and Jessica Rush from “Jersey Boys”
The new production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, which is set to open March 22, originated at Ontario’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival with direction by Tony Award winner Des McAnuff.
The cast features Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ, Josh Young as Judas Iscariot, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Tom Hewitt as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas, and Aaron Walpole as Annas.
The original 1971 New York production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” was mounted by former Bermuda resident Robert Stigwood, the Australian-born entertainment impresario who also made the movie musicals “Saturday Night Fever” [1977] and “Grease” [1978] and who guided the careers of such pop acts as the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton.
Mr. Stigwood lived at the “Palm Grove” estate in Devonshire and at “Wreck Hill” in Sandys Parish for most of the 1970s and ’80s. He later moved to the Isle of Wight and now lives near London.
