Par-la-Ville To Be Renamed Queen Elizabeth Park

March 22, 2012

The City of Hamilton announced it will host a renaming ceremony at Par-la-Ville Park on Saturday April 21, 2012 in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling said, “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we get to celebrate the diamond jubilee of a monarch.

“The City of Hamilton is pleased to announce it is fitting to mark this historic occasion by renaming Hamilton’s premier park and recreational area, Par-la-Ville Park, in honor of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II. The park will be called Queen Elizabeth Park.”

“The City will host a formal renaming ceremony and plaque unveiling on Saturday, April 21, 2012, on the grounds of Par-la-Ville Park at 4:00pm.

“Formal invitations have been extended to community leaders and the general public, especially the residents of our city, are invited to attend. The occasion will be highlighted with a fanfare from the Bermuda Regiment and musical selections from the North Village Band,” Mayor Gosling concluded.

    • Soooo says:

      my thought exactly!!!

      • Yup says:

Watch out, DREB wants the hospital named after him. He is making a come-back.

    • Mack says:

He can bring his Uighur friends along…. be protected by the SWAT team he wants here…have the car pick him up from the tarmac at the airport…and have a full police escort around the island for a tour

    • pepper says:

I can’t believe under Brow’s tenure that he did not change the name of Victoria park !!!

      • Maddog says:

        • Baltic Fury says:

Nope, just that he would screw everything up, and turn a great country into financial leper and failure. Fair play, he succeeded. PLP? it shouldn’t be about black and white, just bad government. Surely you can see that? So why would you vote for them?

        • Finally Left says:

lol no maddog… not that he would make everything Black, but that he would make everything PLP…

while you may not want to see it, there is a difference.

          • Come Correct says:

Dont worry about Maddog, hes a disgusting racist that doesnt deserve to breath our air.

    • pepper says:

omar, I hope Brown will be invited to cut the ribbon at the renaming of the he said he and his wife spent some quality time with the queen and prince , on their last visit to bermuda, it is only right that brown should be handed the scissors

      • Observer says:

        Surely you jest.

      • ItIsWhatItIs says:

I am disappointed that they didn’t rename the park: Dr. Ewart Mugabe Brown.

    • just wondering says:

what on earth does this have to do with Dr. Brown?!! seriously people this is tearing it

      • Finally Left says:

nothing really… just good timing that he bashed the UK so bad in his speech so recently… i think peopel are just havign a fun poke.

    • Hmmm! says:

Can’t they just put her name on a rock in the park and call it a day? Why name the whole park after someone that seldom uses it… I would prefer if it was called the Johnny Barns park…

    • citi zen says:

    • Ganja Mon says:

Why do this?? Im sure she has plenty of properties already names after her..

  2. star man says:

That’ll stick it to the PLP elite.

  3. Al says:

Well, chalk up another landmark that Bermudians will forever call by its old name along with “The Little Theatre”, Kindley Field Road, and the Bermuda Airport.

    • Motts Apple Sauce says:

      Kindley Field Road?

    • Mussel Pie says:

Some old timers still refer to Marketplace in Hamilton as the Piggly Wiggly and Gibbons Co as the Woman’s Shop…

  4. cocoa says:

  5. Ras Bredren I says:

  6. Sandgrownan says:

Awesome. The mouth breathers will be apoplectic with rage.

  7. 32n64w says:

Well deserved. What a great idea.

    • Baltic Fury says:

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. Nothing to do with sticking it to anyone, its just a terrific idea. Proud to be Bermudian AND British.

  8. Wandering says:

So if the park’s name is going to be changed – why spend money on a book as well… – more money

  9. Right 2 the point! says:

Why change the name, what a clown you are. No one cares. Keep the same name fool.

    • GoodideaBadidea says:

Then they shouldn’t have renamed all the public schools then?

  10. omar little says:

piggly wiggly woman’s shop…you feel me?

  11. Jus' Askin' says:

    No hotel?

  12. Just saying.... says:

Why not “Queen Elizabeth II Park”? She’s ‘the second’ for a reason. Are we intending to honour the last Tudor ruler?

  13. Jean says:

I will still call it Par-La-Ville!

    • Barracuda says:

You can call it what you want, the sign will still read ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ park .

      • Rummy says:

        Only if Barracuda, only if.
What would it be called if PLP get re-elected.
        Follow the money.
        Quo Fata Furbrown.

    • 1minute says:

I still call the Nat’l Exhibition the Ag Show. I still go down front street and turn at the old fire station, turn left then turn at the old post office…

BTW, it should be “Queen Elizabeth II Park” as she is the second Queen Elizabeth.

  14. Seawords says:

Who decides on name changes? What ever happened to the will of the people?
One could say that “Par-La-Ville” doesn’t quite cut it (even though the name may bring back a few blurry images to some) but “Queen Elizabeth Park” …?

Leaving expensive ceremonies and plaques aside …

Why the hell should Bermuda glorify a person, born into privleged life and position, by brandishing BERMUDIAN public lands with a name which remind so many of DOMINANCE and the unequal relation of polities.

Does this woman (sorry if it offends all you “sirs” to call her that) in this day and age still deserve this type of colonial honour?

The only FANFARES I hear are that of PETITION!!!

    • Mike says:

The will of the people was lost when they renamed the airport….or was I away the day they asked?

    • Observer says:

Par-la-Ville actually roughly translates from the French ‘By (or through) the city).

    • Really? says:

Wow someone really missed the point.
Its just as a nod to her accomplishment of so many years, you know like the book of good wishes we sent to William and Kate for the royal wedding? Not some bow down “dominance” get up you seem to be hung up on.
And as one of “the people” I’d rather have it named after a woman who has not only been an international icon for peace her entire life but has dedicated a lot of her life to helping children in need.

      • Observer says:

Really?. Well said. Very adult and reasonable thinking.

        • WTF says:

          Icon for peace? Accomplishments?

Who are we talking about again? I would rather they called it the “Jinx Darrell Park”.

  15. Barbie Shanks says:

    I think it’ll work when abbreviated …

“Let’s have lunch in the QE2″

  16. LaVerne Furbert says:

I think it’s a wonderful idea that Her Majesty’s subjects have decided to name a park after her. I’m sure H.E. will be there in his “pith helmet, feathers, and sword” to delight of all of the Royalists on the island.

Maybe we could even attract some tourists from the East Coast to come to Bermuda to participate in the renaming ceremony.

    • jt says:

    • jt says:

Loyalists come in many forms, don’ they now?!

    • Rummy says:

Oh just shut up and and call the election
On the fouth day of Emancipation my true ‘Feel the love’ said too me…………………

      • jt says:

Best be careful lest we lose EB’s knighthood.

        • LaVerne Furbert says:

If EB was interested in a knighthood, he would already be referred to as Sir Ewart Brown. Remember, it is his right to request it, and I doubt if it would be refused.
After all we are still a British Overseas Territory (colony).

          • jt says:

That would be an interesting exercise. Afterall, he has recently proclaimed his utmost respect for the Queen.

          • OvEr says:

            Doubt it

          • Baltic Fury says:

Trust me, it would be refused, what crazy planet are you on? You on the other hand, I’m sure there are titles we can bestow on you.

          • 32n64w says:

It’s not EB’s sole choice though, is it? Don’t the Governor and the Queen have some say?

If EB is such an anti-colonialist why did he want to keep the Honourable title?

    • Rockfish#2 says:

      @ The Defender/8 votes.

I am sure Dame Jennifer will be in attendance along with several other PLP “Royalists” all suitably attired and wearing their”trinkets”

      • Observer says:

And big obnoxious hats…don’t forget them!

    • Soooooo says:

      Sarcastic much?

  17. oportunity knocks says:

just throw up some tents and get ready for the jobless and homeless to move in…it is really amazing that with so many other major issues at hand someone has taken valuable time to suggest this. wasted resources and time on issues like this is why the islands is in such bad shape..

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Opportunity, you need to take your concerns up with the Mayor of Hamilton, Charles Gosling. I can assure you, he is no fan of the PLP Government.

    • 32n64w says:

Wasting resources … sort of like what the PLP have been doing for the last 10+ years?

  18. Navin Johnson says:

Lets call it Freddie wade park

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Navin, we already have the L.F. Wade International Airport. It makes no sense to duplicate names. Navin Johnson Park sounds nice though. Would you like a park named after you?

      • Soooooo says:

How about brownvillle? His ego is bigger than the park!

        • I gotta be me says:

I don’t know why we don’t change the name of the airport to Queen Elizabeth Intl Airport. WTH

  19. LaVerne Furbert says:

I should have asked Navin if he would like a park named after his alias. We all know that there is no one in Bermuda named Navin Johnson. I don’t think parks are after named after cowards.

    • OvEr says:

Why does it matter if someone is using an alias or not? It doesn’t make them a coward. I think people would like you to use an alias every so often because we’re so tired of seeing your pointless, threatening (above) and biased rants. People either laugh or just shake their heads

    • Sandgrownan says:

We don’t name after bullies either…

    • navin johnson says:

did I send you to the phone book? …..hello 411? yes may I have the listing for Navin Johnson please? sad girl really sad…..

      • tricks are for kids says:

@ Navin you call that sad? I call it SCARY…! I guess she took time out of her busy schedule of posting and talk shows..oh let’s not forget the cigarette breaks outside on the steps to look you up! LOL!!! Should you feel flattered or afraid???? LOL!!!!!!!!!

      • Pastor Syl says:

@ Navin: Glad to see I am in good company – misinformation posted as fact by a “reporter” – inverted commas on purpose.

  20. Cancer says:

    So wheres the hotel going?

  21. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Ewart: “I think you should name the park ‘King Ewart Park”.

Committee: “But we’d have to be a KINGdom to do that Dr. Brown”.

Ewart: “Ok I think you should name it ‘Prince Ewart park”.

Committe” But then we’d have to be a PRINCipality”.

Ewart: “Well what the hell are we then”?

    Committee: “We’re a CoUNTry”.

  22. Mountbatten says:

Tyne’s Bay needs a new name ..How About THE Dr. EWART BROWN & Co. Trash Facility ..

  23. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Actually the ‘Ewart Brown Memorial Dump’ sounds much better I think. We could use GP cars as landfill.

  24. cant believe it says:

these white n black people with negative comments do nothing but support white superiority, the white board for the city of hamilton can name the park after their beloved Queen but guees what when Bermuda become INDEPENDANT!!!!! IT WILL BE CHANGED…the future of BERMUDA IS A BRIGHT AND GOOD ONE

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Dumbest post I’ve read in years. Bermuda isn’t going independent for years to come as there is waaaayyyy to much to lose in doing that. Please name one relevant reason to go independent. If you think negotiating power is the reason guess what you need something that others would negotiating with we have nothing we, produce nothing, we can’t feed ourselves, we would loss our EU passports, I believe with all the debt built up those we owe would call in the debts, our dollar would crash and Bermuda would once again remember what “struggle” really means. I see nothing positive from independence at all. Feel go crap like that won’t put food on the table, a roof over anyone’s head (ie the average person not talking about the elite politicians as this would become their summer home only).

LOL name one positive just one……………

    • OvEr says:

In relation to posts like this, I think it’s important to remember that this is not the opinion of the average, right-thinking Bermudian. There are always outliers in every country.

Not that this post deserves a response, but if the PLP really wanted to, they could change the name of the park to anything they want. Parliament retains the power to decide on all matters, and they are certainly more powerful than the Corporation of Hamilton.

    • star man says:

… just like they’re gonna change the name of the airport when the OBA becomes the Government of the day. Tit 4 tat.

  25. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

This is nothing about white n black. It is about EB ruining our country plain and simple. Try to see beyond colour you fool.

  26. floatswitch says:

  27. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

If you read the contents of EB’s speech in the Cayman’s you will see that he is still trying to inflict harm on Bermuda. You and others are obviously too blind or stupid to see. Or maybe you just ‘can’t believe it’. HAHA

  28. Boom Bye Bye says:

    God save the Queen! NOT!!!!

  29. I gotta be me says:

Um Um, Excuse me please… when is the Holiday to celebrate the Jubilee? PLP ordered a holiday when they won an election…on the eve of the euro no less! (probably the FIRST indicator to IB that they needed to get the hell outa Bda). Then another one for their ex-party leader’s funeral! So… where is the holiday for our QEII Jubilee? I need an answer.

  30. Argosy says:

What happened to the proposal to name the “Queen’s Gate” at the airport the “People’s Gate”??

  31. cant believe it says:

Please name one relevant reason to go independent.

    we will be independent!!

Whites always want a majority of black people to not be independent, and when we want independent they want to withdraw all assistance rather than keep good relationships, its almost the same like a parent whose child wants to make it on his own, an then the parent kicks the child out an says dont ever ask me for help your not my child. There will be no help or business relationship between us.
To not want independence is slavery mentality, to have independence with good relationships is freedom…..hmmmm now lets see what you white racist and ignorant blacks have to say….

    • Sandgrownan says:

      That’s pretty stupid.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

That’s not a valid reason and won’t put food on the table or a roof over anyones head. Sorry failed in your attempt to mask your racism. Hater calling other the haters……classic…………………………

LOL pay attention people see it for your self.

    • Tolerate says:

Hahaha, great reason. “Name one relevant reason to jump off a cliff, just one”…..
      “I would have jumped”.
This is too easy. Whites, Blacks, Independence? Are you serious? Over 80% of Bermuda was against Independence. Last I checked, the population of Bermuda is NOT 80% white. As usual any one going against this backward thinking is a white racist or ignorant black. If you’re in the minority on a point, and continue to flog a dead horse, guess who’s ignorant. Because people want security and a sense of stability in life, they are wrong; especially in today’s world climate. Last I checked, Britain didn’t raise the crime rate, steal the money and put people out of work.
You’ll be the first running to the boats for assistance if (god forbid) anything happened to Bermuda. Stepping on women and children on your way.
      Get a life!!!!

  32. Come on says:

Laverne since when do you know everyone in Bermuda’s name…your a real joke woman. You love attention so much it doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad as long as people are talking about you seems like you get your rocks off.

  33. The Grim Reaper says:

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

I wager the majority are on some sort of PLP PR committee maybe not paid but like a trial run for their possible advancement in the party along with radio talk shows. After all you have to show that you toe the party’s thoughts to advance. Sorta stops outside, constructive thinking. I offer as evidence Mr. Furbert as a prime example and before that Mr. T. Dill.

LOL not saying that the OBA doesn’t also but the PLP have the hall mark hatred towards certain people and those that share a similar moral belief.

  34. Bermudian says:

Are you people serious. That lady doesnt give a Rats A$$ about Bermuda.
Too name a park after her when she probably dnt even know where it is or even cares for that matter.

  35. The Hell!! says:

    How about ‘The Peoples Park’
