Alastair Barbour Joins Butterfield’s Board

The Board of Directors of The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited today [May 23] announced that Alastair Barbour has been appointed a non-executive Director, filling the vacancy created by Robert Steinhoff who retired following the 2012 Annual General Meeting.

Mr. Barbour is a Chartered Accountant with more than 25 years experience providing auditing and advisory services to publicly traded companies, primarily in the financial services industry. He was most recently head of KPMG’s Financial Services Group in Scotland until his retirement from the firm in 2011.

He previously held positions with KPMG Bermuda (1983 to 1991), where he was named Partner in 1985, and KPMG in The Bahamas (1978 to 1983). Mr. Barbour trained with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in London and holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.

Mr. Barbour is also a director of public companies RSA Insurance Group plc, Liontrust Asset Management plc, Standard Life European Private Equity Trust plc, and CATCo Reinsurance Opportunities Fund Ltd and private companies CATCo Reinsurance Fund Limited and Scottish Equitable Policyholders Trust Limited.

Brendan McDonagh, Butterfield’s Executive Chairman, welcomed Mr. Barbour to the Board, saying, “We are pleased that Alastair has agreed to join Butterfield’s Board of Directors.

“He has spent his accounting career advising prominent financial services companies in several markets and his experience in Bermuda, The Bahamas and the UK—three important jurisdictions for Butterfield—will be advantageous to the Board as we continue to work to enhance Shareholder value. Alastair will be a valuable addition to the Board of Butterfield and its Committees.”

With Mr. Barbour’s appointment, Butterfield has two UK-based Directors on its Board,reflecting the Bank’s international presence.
