Taxi Driver’s ‘Improper Clothing’ Charge Dropped

June 26, 2012

This morning in Magistrates Court [June 26] taxi driver Clyde Holder had a charge of being “improperly” dressed dismissed.

Taxi regulations have stipulations which include mandating taxi drivers to wear a shirt with a collar. What Mr Holder was said to be wearing that was “improper” was not disclosed in Court.

Mr Holder was originally charged with being improperly dressed while driving his taxi in Hamilton in 2009, and the matter was originally dismissed in 2010. However, when he went to licence his taxi recently he was told there was a warrant out for him due to “improper” clothing charge.

He found himself back in Court, where the charges were dropped again. The Prosecutor indicated that he had not heard of the charge of being “improperly” dressed while driving a taxi before.

  2. Ya Serrs? says:

GLAD WE GOT TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS AND THAT WE’LL ALL BE ABLE TO SLEEP TONIGHT. CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER FOR WHOEVER GREENLIT THE TAXPAYER-FUNDED RESOURCES THAT CORRECTED THIS HORRIFIC PERVERSION OF JUSTICE.

  3. Truth is killin' me... says:

Once again… backward laws and brought before the courts for this crap! Govt get it together and STOP waisting TAXPAYERS MONEY! I’ m tired of this s**t!!!!

    • united says:

What do you mean wasting money? Heck, they just got a $180 million dollar loan, I am sure this money is going to be used wisely.

      • Um Um Like says:

The money is going to our taxi infrastructure. We must keep investing no matter the cost!

  4. I See You Looking says:

So what exactly was he wearing..an Undervest, a Jock Strap or a Taliban turban? LOL

    • So would you and your good lady like to be driven in a taxi by a big hairy male wearing only a pair of ladies brief knickers? – once you let one small matter bypass the system …

  5. g-gurl says:

What a waste of court cost and time !

    • Um heard it all says:

I agree,go after the real criminals please. Was this really a matter for court??

  6. Lord Help Us says:

So they let criminals walk free but want to charge a taxi driver for being improperly dressed. Our court system is a big fat. Joke

  7. Hotaschooks says:

You can drive a Ferry or bus under the influence of drugs or alcohol, have an accident with people onboard and its no big deal, the union and government have your back, but drive a taxi wit a shirt without a collar – HOW DARE YOU! Book em Danno!!!

  8. OMG says:

There needs to be a dress code for our Taxi drivers as they are on the front line for our tourists and business travellers but a simple warning would have sorted this out.

  9. Reverend Pastor says:

I swear are already a banana republic. What a complete waste of time. Meanwhile let majot criminals go due to lack of evidence

  10. Yng Black Mind says:

All of these comments are comepletely idiotic!

The real reason this was in front of the courts is because this taxi driver believes he can do whatever he wants, wherever he wants – just because he can. He has been ticketed for this offence (it is on the books) more than 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 2 YEARS – agreeing to the tickets issued twice, but the “Prosecutor indicated that he had not heard of the charge of being “improperly” dressed while driving a taxi before.” That’s bull – period.

You might not believe that the charge is worth being in front of the Magistrate – - but it is an offence and as our “front line” to our tourists, he should be properly dressed at all times – period.

  11. Man in the Mirror says:

To bad ALL you Nay Saying Hillbillies don’t see the big picture.
First and Foremost the LAW which the Taxi Driver was charged with was created under the UBP Government and has remained UNCHANGED.
Second ALL Taxi Owners and Operators know about the strict dress code.
Third ALL Taxi’s should operate under the basis of Front Line Ambassadors and should Act and Dress accordingly.

Have you ever noticed, that the majorioty of the Older Owners/ drivers dress with a shirt and tie daily, whilst the new younger owners/ drivers want to wear a tshirt, baggy jeans and flip flops.

    I’m just saying

    • terry says:

      Horse crap.
The law has been on the books before the UBP even were founded.
      Fact.

It was more a dress code.

Then again, you know know sh#t especially when we had 10,000 people staying on the island and not trying to get a ride to Horseshoe Bay via a bus.

      Irony.

    • longtail says:

@Maninthemirror not only was this law reportedly on the books before there ever was a UBP, BUT if you happened to notice the charge in this instance stems from 2009 – clearly it was PLP regulators that sought to enforce this trivial matter with a sledgehammer…. on not one occasion but twice!!!

  12. GRIZZ says:

@Maninthemirror I think you might owe some of the NEW YOUNG OWNERS an apology. You didn’t say some, you didn’t say the minority…you said THE NEW YOUNGER OWNERS. I happen to have a lot of YOUNGER friends that not only drive taxi but own them as well. They are well dressed and I’ve even teased them once or twice about how cute they look in their Bermuda shorts. So while you ask us your question, I will now ask mine…”Have you ever noticed how some of the YOUNGER DRIVERS are doing exceptionally well in the taxi business?” You have a nice day and I hope you don’t need to catch a cab….lolol

  13. Grizz says:

@maninthemirror I think you may owe some of the YOUNGER taxi drivers an apology. You didn’t say SOME, you didn’t say MINORITY you said the NEW YOUNGER OWNERS and your comments are sort of off a bit. I have a lot of YOUNGER friends that drive and own taxis and they dress immaculately. I have even teased a few about how they rock their Bermuda Shorts. So you asked your question now I will ask mine…”How many YOUNGER taxi driver/owners do you see out there that do a WONDERFUL JOB?” I know quite a few…Have a good day and I hope you don’t need to catch a cab!

  14. navin johnson says:

    I knew it was the UBP’s fault…..

  15. longtail says:

One can only marvel at the efficiency of a government which sends a taxi driver to court TWICE for apparently not wearing the correct shirt, but cannot keep tyres on our busses!!

    • LMAWTFO says:

Not the government that sent him in, its the prosecution who botched this up. Last I checked they are under the govenors rule, correct?

  16. just observing..... says:

I agree there should be some sort of dress code as a taxi driver who represents bermuda. Gotta say I swear there is one driver out there who actually looks like he sleeps in his taxi and it smells too. He doesn’t dress appropriately either. I don’t like going in his taxi. I try to avoid him. I don’t know his taxi number but I do know that its his mothers taxi and if its him that they are talking about then I know/see and smelt why.
