Ex-Bermuda Resident Found Dead In UK Prison

July 29, 2012

A former Bermuda resident who was jailed in the UK after he stabbed his stepfather to death was found dead in an East Sussex prison, the British media are reporting [1] [2].

Various reports quote a UK Prison Service spokesperson as saying: “HMP Lewes prisoner Nathan Vaughan-Jones was found hanging in a cell at approximately 8.30pm on Friday July 27.

‘He was pronounced dead at approximately 9pm. As with all deaths in custody, the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.”

The Belfast Telegraph reports that it is understood Mr Vaughan-Jones [pictured] was not subject to suicide prevention measures.

In March of this year Mr Vaughan-Jones, 34, was jailed for 11 years after admitting attacking 63-year-old Nigel Ross in the garden of his sister’s home in South Chailey, East Sussex, in March last year.

He admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Maidstone Crown Court in January. During the trial, the court heard Mr. Vaughan-Jones suffered from bouts of depression and had a fraught relationship with Mr Ross, who was described as “controlling”.

Days before the stabbing, Mr. Vaughan-Jones had returned to Britain from Bermuda, where he lived with his wife.
