BHB Confirm Dr Victor Scott: Interim Chief Of Staff
Bermuda Hospitals Board announced the appointment of Dr Victor F Scott, MD, MACP, AGAF, as Interim Chief of Staff for period up to three months.
The previous Chief of Staff, Dr Donald Thomas, was placed on “administrative leave” recently, with the BHB declining to comment on the reasons why.
As Interim Chief of Staff, Dr Scott will report to BHB CEO, Mrs Venetta Symonds, and will lead the medical chiefs at the hospital with a focus on clinical quality, physician engagement and ensuring deadlines for operational readiness project remain on target for the 2014 transition to the new facility.
Dr Scott is the retired Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences at Howard University. Born in Bermuda, Dr Scott is a graduate of the Howard University College of Medicine, from where he retired in 2008 at the rank of Professor of Medicine.
Dr Scott was the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology for 29 years, and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Medicine for twelve of those years before becoming Interim Chairman in 2000. In 2005 he was appointed Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences, after two years serving in the role in an interim capacity.

In 2010 he was elected to Mastership in the American College of Physicians and has served as President and Councilor of the Association of Academic Minority Physicians.
Dr Scott has been named to Washington Magazine’s list of top area gastroenterologists three times. Although retired from Howard University, Dr Scott still volunteers assistance to the Gastroenterology Division and assists the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Bermuda with the weekly CME programme.
Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Venetta Symonds, comments: “I am extremely pleased that Dr Scott has agreed to join us as Interim Chief of Staff. To have a Bermudian physician of Dr Scott’s calibre and experience in this interim role will ensure high quality clinical leadership.
“Although three months may not sound long, there are many clinical quality and operational readiness projects that cannot be delayed during this time. I would like to welcome Dr Scott and thank him for joining us to assist at this time.”
Speaking on behalf of the Board, Chairman Mr Wendall Brown comments: “On behalf of the Board I would like to welcome Dr Scott to BHB and thank him for providing his services for the benefit of BHB and Bermuda. BHB has a very full and complex agenda of improvements planned and I am very reassured that they will progress under Dr Scott for this interim period.”

Does he also get the 700K/year salary, 30K monthly living allowance and paid trips back to the US on a regular basis, or something a little more local?
Why worry about his salary. The concern should be what impact he will have on the way the Hospital is managed!
I think we should give him a fair chance. Unless we have an attitude that says “nothing will work” then we should grant the emimnent physician his respect. Pay him to fix it…Get Donald Thomas to pay and get Herman Tucker back on the stand to answer questions. All of this goes back to dr. Brown who put Herman Tucker in position and backed Dr.Thomas’ launch to meteoric heights. Thats the real culprit…Donald Thomas was arrogant and insecure on top of that. He also was blindly supported by Vanetta and thats why I say we cant let him merely be a scapegoat…And why is the review private and confidential…We arent talking about a military strike plan or police intelligence…godness sake…its a hospital…we dont want patients records…we want the business records…it is our hospital…not the ombudsman or vanetta or the chairman wendell brown…!
