Dr. Barbara Ball Health Scholarship Recipients

August 17, 2012

This morning [Aug 17] Minister of Health Zane DeSilva  met with recipients of this year’s Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarships at Camden House to congratulate them on their awards.

The Minister welcomed recipients Samáe Williams, Jennifer Wilson, Ciara Talbot, Lara Loescher, LeRhonda Mills, Angelita Trott, Erica Ingemann and Veronica Baptista and wished them “the best of luck” as they embark on their future careers in healthcare.

The Minister addressed the recipients at the event and said: “As most of us know, there is an international shortage of healthcare workers. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that there is a shortfall of more than 4.3 million health workers worldwide.

“It is for this reason, coupled with the desire to Bermudianize our island’s healthcare system and to strengthen Public Health in Bermuda, that the Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship was created.”

Since the scholarship was founded the Ministry of Health has financially assisted dozens of Bermudians who are beginning careers or pursuing professional development in public health. This year, the Ministry of Health will provide students with more than $70,000 in scholarship funding.

Scholarships may be offered for study in the following areas: nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, maternal care, dental hygiene, dentistry, psychiatry, drug counseling, social work, occupational safety and health, environmental health and medical studies.

As well as offering scholarships for study in a number of areas, the Ministry of Health also assists successful applicants with summer employment for the duration of the scholarship.

The Minister said: “I am so pleased to be here today to meet such worthy recipients of this award. And, best of all, we can do this under the name of an extraordinary woman, Dr. Barbara Ball – a true heroine of the medical profession here in Bermuda.”

  1. Pitts Bay says:

“…Dr. Barbara Ball – a true heroine of the medical profession here in Bermuda.”

Not to take away from the recipients, but her actions at the BELCO riots will always call into question the true impact of the above statement. Hippocratic Oath and all…..
