Burrows Back In Court, Argument Over Cat Food

August 16, 2012

[Updated] Tara Burrows was back before the Court this morning [Aug 16] after police were called to her house after an argument with her sister and niece over feeding the cats.

Following an overnight detention, Ms Burrows, 41, of Southampton appeared before Magistrate Archie Warner in Magistrates Court this morning.

She pleaded guilty to three charges involving the use of threatening words and resisting arrest; all of which came out of police action following a domestic dispute last night.

The facts read into the record were that around 8pm last night, Ms Burrows and her teenage niece, who lived in the same residence, had been involved in an altercation over the feeding of a cat which resulted in Ms Burrows throwing the cat’s food away.

Around 10pm, the niece’s mother [Ms Burrows' sister] came home and the issue over feeding the cats resumed, resulting in heated words between the two sisters and the police were called.

After police arrived, the Court heard Ms Burrows became aggressive and violent. After being threatened by Ms Burrows, police used a taser in order to subdue her and effect an arrest.

In the course of the struggle, Ms Burrows punched one officer and hurt the little finger of another police officer. After being subdued, she was handcuffed and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

At this morning’s hearing, the Senior Magistrate, noting that this was a second appearance on a similar matter that had started out as a purely domestic dispute, said that he thought it “ridiculous that these matters are before the Courts.” But he then said: “I will not tolerate police being assaulted when they are trying to do their job.”

Ms Burrows had been before the Court in June, where she was convicted of assaulting her sister with a kitchen saucepan during a fight at their shared home over a dispute over cookies.

In deciding and ruling, the Magistrate said: “These problems come about because you are all living together. This criminal offence has only come about because of your living circumstances. I will order you to separate in order to prevent your being drawn into further criminal acts.”

The Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report and a Psychiatric Report. After open court discussions with representatives of Court Services and Child and Family Services, the Magistrate also ordered that Ms Burrows was to be granted bail of $1,000.

He then ordered her to cooperate with Court Services and with Child and Family Services who were to seek alternative accommodation for Ms Burrows and her two children. At this point, Ms Burrows cried out and broke into tears.
