Fire Safety Bill 2012 To Be Introduced

October 28, 2012

With this week designated Fire Safety Awareness Week, Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief announced that the Government would introduce the Fire Safety Bill 2012 in the coming legislative Session.

“The Bill will strengthen the powers of the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service to promote fire safety in premises in Bermuda at every stage of development; from the design stage through construction and use, to demolition.” the Minister said.

The 2012 Bill will adopt specific fire protection codes and standards in support of improved fire safety for Bermuda. Fire Officers will have the ability to perform risk assessments on premises to ensure that codes have been adhered to and to also make recommendations to improve fire safety.

Minister Perinchief concluded: “We intend to work with building owners to achieve high standards of fire safety. The people of Bermuda should feel safe as they go about their daily lives and enjoy themselves at any venue, event or gathering. Fire safety cannot be taken for granted.”

Isn’t that already included in the planning departments review of all renovations and new construction? More red tape….

A fire safety bill? Let me guess… There would be no more smoking in all private structural buildings and from the passing of the bill, cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms and all other furniture including curtains, blinds, carpet and flooring will be made of metal. All new home owners will have to go through an evacuation procedure of their new nonflammable home with the entire fire dept. looking on ready to hand over an evacuation certificate as approval of occupancy…. There’s not enough for the fire dept. to do, I guess…

Is it really necessary to spend that much time on fire Safety? Bermuda probably has the least fires in the world if it wasn’t for 911 the fire department wouldn’t be busy at all! we are pretty good with fires..a few fires were electrical and that is something that maybe we could look at but no much we can do about…the only fire we NEED to deal with is gunfire!

Mr. Pessimistic, is your glass always half empty?

@ cool… People like you make me laugh. I bet when a fire breaks out in town and consumes many of the old buildings the first thing you and others would say is “why didnt government update the fire code?”. When it comes to fire and safety IMO we should spend time on such issues. Then we wonder why we are so reactive as opposed to a preventative

  7. cool... says:

@Claudio—-glad you got a laugh—-government has built several buildings, including apt/condos ect and not once did we hear of a fire code or anything to do with prevention.,.. so ummmhmmmmmmmm..smell the election sweetie… Bermuda has very little fires, the main threat is the pond and he not once mentions that!
