Jermal Woolridge Wins Bronze Medal In China

October 29, 2012

The 6th Sanda World Cup concluded recently with Chen Yanzhao retaining his World Cup title by defeating LandeertJan Mulder by KO in the second round. Bermuda’s Jermal Woolridge shared the Bronze Medal and 3000 RMB prize with Ukraine’s Rudovskyi Oleksandr.

China once again dominated the World Cup with all 8 athletes claiming Gold Medals in their respective weight classes.

In his first round match Woolridge won the first round decisively where every judge scored in his favor, Woolridge was forced off the platform twice in both rounds 2 and 3 which resulted in losing the match 2-1.

Woolridge clearly dominated the first round over the larger Mulder of Holland by executing numerous takedowns and scoring with both punches and kicks. Woolridge began to fatigue in the second round and the experienced Dutchman took advantage of that and was able to push Woolridge off the platform.

International San Shou rules indicate forcing an athlete off the platform twice in a round results in winning the round. It was more of the same in the 3rd which resulted in victory for Mulder.

Bermuda coach Garon Wilkinson said “It’s heartbreaking to lose in the manner that we did. We won the first round convincingly and after Woolridge fatigued he began to lose concentration. Mulder called on his experience as a former World Champion and was able to take advantage of that and win the match.

“I am proud at what Woolrdige and our association have accomplished for Bermuda though. The fact that he even qualified for the World Cup is a giant feat and we are looking forward to next year. We have had a long fighting season and with all the knowledge Woolridge attained while training in Canada in combination with the training we received in China makes me excited for what the future holds.”

Yanzhao of China defeated Oleksandr of Ukraine 2 rounds to 0 to meet Mulder of Holland in the final.
