Trench Collapse, Rebecca Rd Temporarily Closed

October 25, 2012

[Updated] A Works & Engineering trash truck has collapsed a portion of the trench where Government’s Southampton road-widening project is ongoing and the road is temporarily closed to traffic, effective immediately.

A statement said: “BELCO wishes to advise motorists that Rebecca Road in Southampton, near Waterlot Inn, is temporarily closed to traffic, effective immediately.

“Trenching on Rebecca Road, in conjunction with Government’s Southampton road-widening project, has been temporarily suspended, as a commercial vehicle has collapsed a portion of the trench.

“The road will be reopened later today, when the vehicle has been removed and the trench secured. BELCO apologises to motorists and residents in the Rebecca Road area for the inconvenience.”

Update 3.04pm: BELCO said they “expect that Rebecca Road will reopen to traffic today by 5:00 PM with traffic controls in place.

“Government will complete asphalting tomorrow to repair damage that occurred when the area being trenched was collapsed by a Works & Engineering trash truck.”

  1. ABM says:

Before any of you political rabbits jump on the blame wagon, this was Belco’s fault.

  2. YouRwrong says:

IT was NOT belcos fault , can you not read , it was a trash truck that collapsed the trench. It was thanks to belco that it was repaired so fast , Belco has some of the hardest working most diligent workers in this country.

  3. Been Watching says:

Not Belco, not PLP, not OBA, not UBP, maybe not trash truck’s fault either. What about the trenching companies. Surprised it didn’t happen on middle road. Never seen a trench open so long and was also surprised it wasn’t reinforced as it looked like it was undermined. I travel through once a week and can’t believe how long its taking. Too bad D&J is not doing it probably would have been finished with no mishaps. Seen them reinforce them all the time.

    • Rockfish says:

      Whatever.

D&J can’ t have it all. It’s too many small firms out there with all BERMUDIAN staff who also need work.

The economy is not great right now..and for non-Bermudians to be working on this jobsite would cause a public outcry.

How bout you call W&E and enquire why the trenching is taking so long….and report the FACTS…

    • street wise says:

Actually, W&E is just a make-work program of the plp gumbymint. Except they really don’t work… six guys standing around, one working.
